A friend had a DS and she tells me that the first 6 months you'll feel terrible. I thought maybe a couple of months but six? On Oct. 8 I will find out my date for the surgery. I am excited and a little nervous. I'm 57 and am a little concerned about my age and having the surgery. I've had 5 C-sections so the surgery is not the issue, it is how will I feel afterwards. Also, very new member.

There is a specific DS Board under forums that you might want to post this and probably get more answers from. I had RNY, and while I didn't feel terrible, the first 6 months was quite a learning experience and figuring out what you can and can't eat... everyone can be different in what agrees with them.

Wow, it sounds like she had a rough recovery. It's definitiely a YMMV thing, as I was just reading a guy on another board is feeling great and meeting all requirements at 2 weeks out, and ready for a more challenging diet.

It's been so long since my DS, I don't totally recall how long till I felt normal, but felt decent within a few weeks, but I had slight nausea issues for a while. Not sure why, but my surgeon didn't want me on PPI's or acid reducers, which most of us need immediately post op, or longer.

Plenty of folks have had their DS in their 50 or later, so that shouldn't be a thing. For me, it was mainly just an issue of a lower energy level for a while, so there was no going back to work within a couple weeks that wasn't something like sedentary desk work.

I felt road hard and put away wet for about six weeks, then by 8 weeks I was feeling like myself again and really hit the ground running when I returned to work.

Some feel grwat after a few weeks, for others it can take six months. But that's true with ANY surgery, not just DS. There's no way to predict how any individual will bounce back.

How you feel and how quickly you recover will also depend on whether or not your surgeon does the DS "open" or laparoscopic.  The surgeon in my hospital only does these "open"...and recovery is a much longer and rougher road for those people.

I had the DS six months ago and after the first wee, recovering from surgery,I have been great.m

just because she had a hard time doesn't mean everyone will. She is really doing a disservice to tell ppl stuff like this.
