One Week to Go for Sleeve and chickening out
You need to base the decision on what is right for you. If you are good at losing weight and maintaining that lose then this surgery my not be for you. For each person who knows you are thinking of having surgery there will be atleast one horror story they have to tell you. Take all the stories with a grain of salt. This is your journey only you can make it what you want.
7 months out and loving my RNY and LIFE
Bonnie RNY 2/11/15 by Dr. Takahaski

I'm three weeks post of from RNY and I was the same as you. I could lose but never maintain long term. I'm so glad I had this. I'm already feeling better. You have to do what is best for you, not them. Follow your heart. I've seen so many people on here say that they were going to do it years ago but changed their mind, only to end up doing it 4 or 5 or more years down the line and then say they wish they had just done it years ago. Ultimately the decision is yours. Follow your heart.
When I told people I told them that I have already made up my mind, researched the crap out of it. I knew all the risks vs benefits. When my friends started to become negative about the surgery I told them I did not want to be talked out of it. One friend immediately said "ok" and said "then I support your decision ". Not everyone will agree. As long as you know you are doing the right thing for yourself than you are. I canceled my first surgery 2 years prior because of the negative comments. 2 years later I regained everything I had lost trying to prove I could do it on my own. I waisted two years!!!! I am now 6 weeks out and feel great. Of course no hamburgs yet. However looking good feels better than eating a greasy hamburg!!!
Good luck with your decision!

LOVE everyone's thoughts but yours really resonates with me. It is indeed the reason to do it!
You are doing the right thing! My surgery weight was a little less than yours but I absolutely NEEDED this surgery in order to maintain my weight. I'm coming up on my 3rd winter at goal weight and I've been able to wear the same winter clothes each year. Do you know when the last time that's happened? NEVER! I was always going up or down but could never, ever stay the same. Every season I'd always have to buy new clothes because they were either too big or too small (usually too small).
This surgery gives you the tool to lose AND maintain -- if you're willing to make the other changes needed.
We go to Disneyland this December and it will be the first time I've ever gone as a normal size adult. Looking forward to it!
I'll have sleeve surgery on 9/24 and am having doubts. I'm sure this is typical but I have a few friends that are trying to "talk" me out of it -- or are at least questioning my decision. I've lost 40 lbs. in 6 months from 261 to 221 so they are saying why not just keeping losing on my own? My response is because I can lose but I can't maintain. I've yo-yo'ed all my life and want to get healthy. I'm 55 and have a 12 year old. I had my knee replaced 6 months ago and am doing things to try to get to take my daughter to Disney World.
I feel deep down that I'm doing the right thing but have to admit that their statements are kind of getting to me.
Any thoughts/comments? Thanks in advance!
Cari
I would steer clear of those "friends" till after surgery. You answered your own question... It is not just about losing but maintaining also.
Many have chickened out only to return a year later even more heavy and wishing they hadn't chickened out. Don't be one of them
Stay focused on YOUR goals--better health, being here for your daughter. I have the naysayers and I let them say whatever they felt. Didn't change my mind one bit--they have decided to support me, keep quiet or move on. I had VSG to prevent knee surgery and be here for my 10 year old son! Almost 6 months post op and it's the best decision I made!
Take care and keep your eyes on the prize--BETTER HEALTH!!
I'm hoping that this will keep me from having to have my other knee done. Actually both my gastric surgeon and ortho surgeon suggested and support the both surgery but both said to do the knee first. I'm still recovering but trying.
