i am 10 days out of surgery and have been trying to get protein in the past 3 days. It makes me sick. I can hardly get one down and goal is 5. Also I was doing fine drinking water until about three days ago without pain and I now have pain when I drink. I just feel like a setback. Any suggestions?

I drank my protein shakes out of 1 ounce cups.  It kills two birds with one stone, it gives you protein and liquid.  You will spend a lot of time drinking but it will be worth it in the long run.  Also, I drank chicken broth flavored protein (Unjury) at about 110F which helped also, so try different temperature liquids.  Good luck!

You are supposed to drink FIVE protein shakes a day?!?  I have personally not heard of that before (and, honestly, I cannot imagine how anyone early post op could do it...  I know that there is no way in hell that I could have done it).

Sometimes it helps to make the shakes thinner, but because watery, milky-type shakes are pretty disgusting IMO, I would recommend trying the fruity Syntrax nectar protein powders (lemonade, tart cherry, peach, sour apple, etc.) that are like a slightly thickened Crystal Light rather than a milky shake.  They are much more amenable to being made thinner (they use water rather than milk).

If drinking plain water has become a consistent problem, call your surgeon.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

I found that I did better with liquids that were room temperature compared to ice cold.  Good luck!

I never said it would be easy. I said it would be worth it.
