Has anyone had the dreaded leak that can occur?

My son in law has a leak he is recovering now. He is back to no eating for 12 weeks, not even a drink. He has a drain to drain out the infection and is feed, by IV. It is a horrible situation. I wonder if this has happen to anyone else and if you can return to normal after? It is horrible to watch, he says he has no regrets about surgery. Help I need some feed back.
