Long distance driving

I am scheduled to have RNY in a week.  I just found out today that I will required to be traveling about 7 hours just a week later.  Do any of you have any experience or suggestions?

Travelling how? By car? Are you the driver? If so, don't do it is my advice.

I would suggest planning to get out of the car every couple of hours to walk around in order to help prevent blood clots.  Also, have a plan for how you're going to handle eating/drinking whatever it is you're allowed to eat at just one week postop.

You didn't say whether the travel is for work, pleasure, family business, etc., but I would also suggest that you have a backup plan in case you're not feeling well enough to go. Some people feel well enough to travel at one week post-op, but many people don't. My RNY was open, but even after my lap gallbladder surgery (after which I was eating normally), I wouldn't have been up for traveling at just a week out. Don't underestimate how fatigued you may be from surgery and lack of nutrition!

I could not do that. I was very week for app 2-3 weeks. Also it was very painful to sit for a long time..

and last but not least - i would be scared to leave my area - in case of any complication...I woudl like to be close to my doc.. and hospital...

you may still need pain med at a week out. No driving until you have been narcotic free for 24 hrs

I could have done it, no problem.  I had no narcotics after the day of surgery and was driving my kid to a golf lesson and looking after my 11 month old the day after I left hospital.

I was a lightweight (40 bmi) and have a good pain tolerance, so appear to have had a much easier time than some who are on narcotics for weeks.

I had lapband done and drove four hours the next day.Just be prepared with want you can eat and drink. Also no pain pills. When you hurt stop and walk. Good luck.

I was told I was not allowed to drive for a week afterward. But I felt well enough to do most things after about 4 days. However, even now 6 week post op, my main incision gets sore after about 2 hours of driving. Absolutely make sure you make frequent stops to walk around, and make sure you pack your food/shakes!

When is your one-week post-surgery check-up?  You should be discussing this with your surgeon who knows the particular risks you may face better than we would.

I would NOT recommend this in your plans.  While there are some who are quite resilient and might have done this without a problem, there are many, MANY of us that took several weeks to recover.  It was a good 6 weeks before I felt like myself again, and there are no guarantees on how you will feel either, from the basics and fatigue of recovery to figuring out how to survive with food while your stomach and internal plumbing are trying to come to terms with what just happened.

I recommend either rescheduling your trip or your surgery.
