RNY vs vertical gastric sleeve

NSAIDs pose some risk for anyone who takes them, whether they've had WLS or not. However, the anatomy of the RNY (NOT the VSG or the DS, just the RNY) greatly increases that risk. Those with the VSG or the DS have precisely the SAME risk with NSAIDs as they did pre-op.

Thanks for the facts!

Oh she definitely has done research and we have had many discussions.  I'm just trying to gain all knowledge I can to be thoroughly informed.  I'm a nurse and have a natural curiosity.  We haven't even attended the initial seminar with surgeons and staff yet.  You can bet I'll be her cheerleader and definitely understand that this is her decision and responsibility.  Thanks for your help!

Well, this is definitely the place to get questions answered.  Everyone has opinions!

😂😂😂 I respect opinionated people who are willing to share especially where my daughter's welfare is concerned!  Thanks for taking time!

For a 19 year old, I highly recommend the Sleeve. At five years post-op, the Sleeve and the RNY have pretty much the SAME excess weight lost stats, but the Sleeve has far fewer potential complications. It's still a fully-functional stomach, just small.

I really can't think of any negatives to the Sleeve. As a DSer, I have a Sleeved stomach. I've found it very easy to live with, and I've been living with it for nearly 12 years now. Also, should restrictional alone not prove enough for your daughter long-term, it's a pretty straightforward procedure to convert the Sleeve to a complete Duodenal Switch. (The DS has the best long-term, maintained weight-loss stats of all the current forms of WLS.)

I actually agree with Ms. Batt though I had an RNY five years ago and am VERY happy with it .  Your daughter's metabolism will slow with pregnancies, age etc... . I wouldn't make a decision based on NSAIDS because now they're proven to be stroke inducing for everyone ...there will be safer  better pain meds available in the future guaranteed.

If I had a do over I would probably have a DS as a lightweight myself . I do worry about my metabolism slowing and not being able to lose the last ten/twenty lbs .   The flip side of  RNY vs DS is less risk of long term debilitating vitamin deficiencies  because there is significantly less malabsorption.

At 130 LPs overweight i would advise your daughter to have a WLS so she can have the best life .. while her skin can still spring back tat and a world of opportunities awaits her . The biggest regret most of us have here is waiting as long as we did . ((())) hugs
