Over 10 years out and losing weight very rapidly

Had my RNY 10+ years ago and lost significantly. Almost got to my goal weight set by my surgeon and myself. Then a traumatic experience occurred that led to some severe psychiatric issues which lead to high amounts of psychiatric meds and long bouts of depression. Ended up gaining back all the weight I had lost. Then almost two years ago began having issues with gallbladder and diet changed due to not knowing at the time that it was the culprit. May of 2014 had emergency surgery to remove gallbladder and since then have lost almost 90#. All my doctors are extremely concerned. Gastroenternologist diagnosed my symptoms as IBS, yet they only arose after gallbladder was removed. Diet is still very touchy. Still have to stick to a fairly bland, very very low fat, low fiber, low protein diet or I will have extreme dumping. I've gone to see my surgeon *****moved gallbladder since he is a bariatrc surgeon (just doesn't perform RNY) and he's bewildered. He has told me to follow through with Castro doc reccomendation for colonoscopy but I'm only 33 and I'm wondering if there are other tests that are less invasive that could be done to see what might be the issue. My PCP ran a whole slew of tests and all came back good. I'm just wondering if there are any specialist out there that specialize both in bariatrics and gastrointestinal issues, especially in the Dallas, Texas area. Thanks

And they don't think it's as simple as the Rny doing its job as intended, especially with the restricted diet?

That is 15 months to lose 90#, while it is a great loss, doesn't seem alarmingly fast. I know I have seen some people talk about something called SIBO that they have a very limited foods they can eat. Do a search for it, maybe it fits.

I am 10+ years out also and recently had regain.  With exercising and getting back to the basic rules for RNY I dropped weight pretty fast considering my age.  Keep an eye on your labs and stay on top of things.

Keep us posted on how you are doing!

Keep in mind this is an unintentional weight loss and the diet is only due to what can be tolerated.  There are numerous other underlying symptoms that I didn't want to bombard the board with and have been so heavily medicated for all of these symptoms and yet the weight is still falling off and I'm living a very sedentary life. Just ha d reconstructive knee surgery 3 weeks ago after waiting for insurance to approve it through all the Dr's for the last 2 and half months. My main goal is is there such a thing as a gastro/bariatric specialist?

There has to be such a combination out there.  Try a large teaching hospital.  I googled it and got places like Yale University.

are you tracking what you are eating to see what our total daily calorie/protein/carb/fat  content is for the day? If it is low, that will explain the weight loss!

Check for SIBO (Google that) or parasites. Also - food allergies.

IBS can be caused by SIBO. I am treating mine right now... Post op WLS we are more prone to that.

The good news is that currently FDA approved a very expensive antibiotic (1300 for 2 week treament) that can help with SIBo, so insurance companies actually pay for that, plus manufacturer has a program that helps with the copay...

IBS- and SIBO- Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth.

Reconsider a colonoscopy.  At the very least it'd be a "rule out".  It's pretty much a painless procedure in my opinion.  The prep is very easy compared to even five years ago.

I find pap smears to be way more invasive than a colonoscopy!

I hope they get an answer for you soon.

Colonoscopies aren't invasive!  It's a super easy procedure and the prep has gotten better tasting over the years.
