Diet Pepsi gets rid of aspartame - will you go back to drinking diet pop?
I am a tea and water girl... I was a Pepsiholic, and drank Pepsi from the time I got up until I went to bed. So for me pop is a painful reminder of my fat days. Can't/won't drink it.
If you stopped drinking diet pop due to the negative press on aspartame, will you start drinking it again now that Pepsi is removing aspartame? And, how do we know the replacement is any better? It's a blend of artificial sweeteners sucralose and acesulfame potassium. Yep that sounds safe

FWIW, a major review of all the scientific data on aspartame shows "The studies provide no evidence to support an association between aspartame and cancer in any tissue. The weight of existing evidence is that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a nonnutritive sweetener." (This page has a pretty good summary for non-geeky folks.)
Sucralose is better known as Splenda. The scientific verdict is similar to that on aspartame: most likely safe in standard quantities.
Acesulfame potassium is known as "ace-k." Government reviews have also shown it as most likely safe as well, though there's less research on this blend.
Just because something has a long, scary-sounding chemical name doesn't instantly mean it's bad for you! (Not saying that artificial sweeteners are HEALTHY, either, but no need to panic.) :)

I swear that I was addicted to Diet Coke prior to surgery, and that was the hardest thing for me to give up. I didn't stop because I thought it was bad for me (although, I wouldn't say it was good either), but I didn't like that I liked it so much. So, no more diet coke for me. I don't want to get back to where I was.

Nope, I won't be drinking it. It has nothing to do with whether or not the artificial sweeteners are safe, either, it's because the artificial sweeteners (no matter which kind) taste absolutely disgusting. I never have been able to figure out how people can actually use the stuff. If the option is either artificial sweeteners or nothing, I'll go with nothing. At least "nothing" doesn't taste like a mouthful of pennies and leave a horrendous aftertaste.

My husband is the same way! I'll drink a few cans of Diet Whatever a week, but my husband won't touch the stuff. Makes me wonder if it's like cilantro, where it just tastes like crap to some people but fine to others.

I think so. I know there are other chemicals that people can either taste or not taste, depending on their genetics. When I was a grad student, I had to teach a biology lab where we did a "tasting" experiment with papers that had different chemicals on them, and it was interesting to see which people could taste certain ones and which ones couldn't.
For me, I never could understand how some people thought diet soda actually tasted like regular soda, since it was so horrible tasting to me. It seems like it's just gotten worse as I've gotten older, since I can remember occasionally drinking diet Dr. Pepper when I was a kid and I don't remember it being totally disgusting. Now, I can't drink it at all, or anything else with artificial sweeteners (no Nectar for me!). My mom is the same way, but my dad seems to like diet drinks, crystal light, etc.

Which ones do you recommend? The only one I like so far is the lime Dasani additive in the white bottle, but it doesn't have sweeteners in it.
