sense of smell post op

Hello-

I had surgery 5 days ago and everything had gone smoothly. I have an On-Q pump which drips local anesthesia to the belly and this has helped remarkably with post op pain. I haven't needed an pain meds since 48 hours post op. My "concern" is the I constantly smell a sour smell. It awakens me from my sleep. Is this typical? Thanks for your reply.

Congratulations on your surgery!

Yes, its normal for your sense of smell to be off   My sense of smell was off the charts.  If my son was cooking pasta I had to put towels under the door as the smell made me so sick.  It lasted about 3 months. Hang in there!

Thanks for the reply. On another note, can you suggest a good protein drink? Whey protein and soy protein drinks gag me, literally. I am doing OK with the hydration, but I am definitely not getting sufficient protein. Thanks in advance for you reply.

Hi CFDR,

I would suggest going to somewhere like GNC and get some sample size proteins, until you find one you can get down.  That is why I suggest to members not to stock up on too much before surgery because your tastes changes and what you liked pre-op is not always what you liked post op.

Check out Eggface's profile for a lot of great recipes to help get your protein in.  Be patient, it's hard at first because you can't take in very much, but it will get better.

I'm almost a year out and since surgery my sense of smell is insane. I thought it would go back a few months after surgery - no such luck.

My sense of smell has been on overdrive since surgery. Things taste differently too.
