Crackers?

Just curious...I am 7 months out from having RNY and I have a question about crackers and cheese.

I have read a lot of posts on how RNY patients didn't eat anything off the "plan" until they met goal.

So, does that mean they didn't eat crackers?  For those patients that stated they didn't eat anything off their food list until they met their goal weight-we're crackers on your list?

Just curious, because I read one post from someone that said they didn't eat bread, crackers, cheese, pasta, or sugar until they met their goal weight.  Crackers are on my list, along with cheese.

I was impressed, to say the least, that they were able to follow such strict guidelines.  I have lost 80 lbs in 7 months.  Do you think my weight loss is slowing now because I am eating cheese (hard) and crackers?  I don't snack and exercise at least 4x's per week.  When I have my cheese and crackers-it is a meal for me.  I eat 4 saltine crackers with 4 oz of hard cheese.

BTW, I have read that you're only supposed to consume that much cheese for the entire week.

Any thoughts on how much hard cheese us RNYers should eat, if any?

I find I am constantly re-evaluating what I am doing. Some people on here do very low carb. Most do low carb. My Surgeon's mantra has always been "Protein first then veggies and if you have any room then fruits and (starchy) carbs." He never said no carbs but it should be on the end of the list. I never count how much cheese I eat for the week. I never heard the 4oz thing. Weight loss does slow down. If you are in a stall or stop losing I always think it is a good idea to try some new foods and change up what you are eating. I don't consider it "off plan" when I eat an occasional carb. You have to know yourself as well - what your triggers are and what might send you down a wrong path. I am a NY girl and it would be easy to eat a lot of pasta and pizza. So I just stay away for the most part. If I buy SF Skinny cow ice cream sandwiches I will eat them everyday until they are gone. Not a good choice to have in the house. 80lbs in 7 months is a great number as long as you are losing consistently.

"White carbs" such as crackers, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes aren't a good choice.  The crackers especially can be a very slippery slope.

Weight loss does tend to slow.  Don't stress about it.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.  I am going to cut out the crackers and see if my weight loss starts to come off a little more quickly.  Also, watch the amount of cheese (hard cheese), I eat and track that as well.  I don't crave carbs - for me, cheese and crackers is a quick lunch for me.  Dinner is mostly always spinach, chicken salad with no dressing, but, I do put sunflower seeds and dried cranberries on top.  For me personally, my weight began to climb because I wasn't planning my meals and ate what was fast.  I don't want to start that again.  Thanks again for your help.

4 ounces of cheese is a LOT of calories. A very large percentage of your daily ration.

CRACKers are the devil's food. They are nutritionally just empty calories, and make you crave more. Stay away.

Crackers are on my plan, but my dieticians recommend limiting them to occasionally having them and not eating them often. My rule is protein, veggies, then starches if room, with no more than two 1/4 cup servings of starch per day. I really strive to avoid any kind of white carbs or empty calories on a daily basis.

I've never heard the 4 oz of cheese per week rule. I'd be S.O.L. if I had to follow that...I eat an ounce of cheese ( hard or soft ) in some form every day. Lunchmmeat/ cheese "roll-ups" are a go-to lunch for me.

Yes I agree.  I have a string cheese at lunch everyday.  I think that adds up (I will have to see how many oz. that is).  LOL.  I love my cheese.

I think the OP meant 4 oz of cheese in one sitting. For the American and cheddar I eat regularly, that's 440 calories, plus the crackers. That could be over half a day's allotment during losing phase.

I read it as the same: four oz of cheese with four crackers=one meal. I guess, why even bother for only four crackers? Also, four oz of cheese at once? That would be way too much for me at one time. Maybe in a week, or two...
