Am I doing the right thing? I'm scared.
There are going to be a lot of folks tell you that you can do it on your own, that you don't need it..etc. etc. The main thing I tell them is that I have tried everything and it has not worked for me. If I could do it on my own..I would have done so years ago. Also make them aware that the surgery is not the "easy way out". It's a lot easier, but less effective in my opinion to "do it on your own". Especially when you have PCOS. I've got PCOS too. I have lost 40 pounds on my own before. That lasted all of maybe 6 months and it took me about 6 months to lose that 40. Next thing I know..I gained it all plus some. I have done this a few times.
The weight loss surgery is a tool and a tool that I feel teaches you healthy eating habits because you can not gorge yourself with such a smaller stomach without consequences. Obviously I do not know much about it since I am still pre op but it's just what I have read about. Also, the thing that helps me the most with the fear is a quote I read somewhere..it said "Weight loss surgery has risks, obesity has guarantees." How true that is!! Good luck to you and try not to allow anyone to guide you in your decision. I've gotten to where I just do not mention it to any family members or friends that I feel will not support me.
I think one of the things that pushed me over when I went to a orientation course was the hosp I was looking at offered two options, one medically assisted weight loss (ie medicines, dietician, psych etc), and the other WLS. When asked by an attendee why only the WLS was covered by Insurance, the presenter said because WLS has a proven track record of success (not so much the other methods). Insurance wants you to be successful because in the long run, your success means it costs them less for ongoing care, meds, co-morbidities, etc, hence why they will pay for it...
