Hair loss...is there any way to prevent or stop it?

I'm already starting to have hair loss and I'm only out of surgery 2 and a half months. Is there any way to prevent or stop this? Thanks

Short answer: not really.

What you're dealing with is "telogen effluvium," and its part of your body's response to the trauma of surgery. Supplements and special shampoo won't prevent the hair loss, and probably won't make it grow back any faster either.

In the interim, many people try new haircuts, use different products (mousse, hair fibers, etc.), or even wear wigs to deal with it.

The good news is that it won't last forever, most folks seem to see it taper off by about the 8 month mark.

After about the 8th month or so....will the hair start growing back normally? Or will it always be thinner? I'm hoping that this didn't start early because I have a hard time getting in all the protein everyday...some days I just can't seem to get it down. Thanks

It should start growing back normally, so no worries there.

On days when you don't get enough protein, how much DO you get get down? There are other effects besides hair loss from not enough protein.

I would say I always get at least 30 g of protein per day. I've been really trying to get 60 g or more the last few days. I started getting kind of ill from the protein shakes, so I've been driving Isopure from GNC the last few days....but that can get pretty expensive. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

If you like Isopure, look into Syntrax Nectar, you can buy it in big tubs or single-serve packets so you can try them out. A few places sell sample packs so you can try all the different flavors before you commit to buying a big tub. I like the fuzzy navel, and the lemonade is pretty good too.

I've also got a few "go to" snacks that I have almost every day and are easy to keep around. I eat a LOT of string cheese! And I try to drink a small glass of milk in the morning before I head to work. Hard-boiled eggs and Greek yogurt are good choices as well. If you always have them in the fridge, it's easy to snag them!

I love the unflavored Isopure protein powder. What I have found that helps me is mixing one scoop with Crystal Lite (Fruit punch) and a bottle of water. Not only am I getting in my protein, but also my water. I use two packs of the Crystal Lite but that's because if not it taste to watered down. Just a suggestion. Until I figured this out I struggled with fluids and protein.

Things will get easier the further out you get though! It is hard in the beginning to get all the protein in. I usually get just over 100g a day. My NUT also told me if hair loss happens to up protein and zinc. But from what i have read this is just a normal process.

I have had 2 separate episodes of hair loss.  There isn't anything you can do to stop it.  You can make sure you are getting your vitamins in as well as your protein.
