Does it seem like Hollywood lies about weight loss?

I recently had a CT scan. The numbers on the machine when I got out said, "666." I pointed to them and said to the skinny, young tech, "Yikes, that can't be good, huh?" And she said without a trace of humor, "Oh, no, that's not your weight."  Apparently she was under the impression that because I'm fat I never weigh myself and assume I'm over 600 pounds!

omg.  I would have asked her why she assumed I thought it was my weight and put her on the spot to make her feel as uncomfortable as possible.

I said, "You must be new, huh?" And she said, "Umm, no, why?" And I said, "Oh, it just seemed like you were still trying to figure things out." HA!

I imagine part of it is related to how people carry their weight. I was 285 at my heaviest, but doctors tended to under-guess my weight by 40lb or so when I went in to visit my GP or whatnot.

I do think magazines and whatnot DO tend to under-report sizes, though. I recall reading an article that mentioned Gabby Sidibe as being a size 18. That looks WAAAAY different then I did at an 18, and most other people I know as well.

I think celebrities tend to underreport their own weight loss. If she said she had lost 100 pounds instead of 50 (I, too, scoffed when she said it was only 50 pounds), people would probably be able to "do the math" and figure out that she was probably close to 300 pounds. If she says 50, it makes it seem (or she may THINK that it makes it seem) like she wasn't as heavy as she was initially.

Once I had lost a little over 100 pounds, I was reluctant to tell most people exactly how much I had lost for the same reason.  I was embarrassed for even my own mother to know that I had been over 330 pounds (and only 5'3").

There was a basketball player quite a few years ago who listed his height as 6'11", when he was clearly taller than guys who were 7'1". When asked why he would lie to make himself shorter, when most players lied to seem taller, he said that 6'11" makes you tall, but anything over 7 feet made you a freak.

I think celebrities under-report their weights, and weight loss, so no one will think they're freaks.

6'3" tall, male.

Totally get that!   Truly do.   But for someone who is a fat acceptance advocate because of someone already treating her like a freak I guess I would have expected more and we should have seen some real honesty from her about the changes she is going through.

I can 100% identify with this. I sometimes feel torn between being proud of the fact that I've lost 150 pounds and embarrassed that people can "do the math" and figure out that I was well into the 300's at my heaviest. And that will be even more obvious when I get to goal.

This is exactly how I feel!! People will ask "how much have you lost?"  Depending on the day that either annoys me or thrills me.  I am proud, but like you, can almost hear their calculators clicking.

My family knows I've lost over 100 lbs now. When I told my dad I still wanted to lose about another 65, he said, "oh no, you can't have any more left to lose!"
