I am not a professional, but can only share my individual experience.

I have been depressed with anxiety for a very long time.  I have been on anti-depressive medication for over 20 years.  Over the years I have tried many times to come off the medication because I didn't like some of the side effects.  Every time it was a disaster and I ended up a mess having to get right back on the medication.

I had my surgery in Oct of 2014, and I have been getting stronger and at the beginning of 2015, I decided that it was time, I started to wean myself off the medications, slowly taking less and less medication.  I have now been off the medication for three month.  It hasn't been easy, even with the weight loss.  Its been a struggle, I've had to learn coping skills and I pray a lot for guidance and assistance.  I did it.  My family has been a great deal of support, especially my sister.  I feel so much now, I'm not numb anymore.  I want that!  I react to life's ups and downs.  I'm learning to cope without the medication and it's a new me!

Be prepared to face some of the issues that the medication only masks.  Don't be afraid, you'll be stronger because of it.
