Gastric Reflex

My brother is 27 days post surgery. He had the gastric bypass surgery. I want to know if this is normal or should he be concerned.

1) he suffered from gastric reflex post surgery and the doctor told him that he shouldn't suffer from that anymore. Well he has been experiencing some heavy gastric reflex. If this is normal can anyone tell me what one does for this situation.

2) He has started to eat his soft diet. Today he tried a scramble egg but I guess it didn't go well for him because he threw it up. Is this common?

I am asking for him because I have an account here due to the fact that I'm 13 months I had the bariatric sleeve done! I have lost almost 200 LBS!!! Thank you for any or all info.

1.  He needs to go see his doctor for a solution to this.  Is he on carafate?  If not, he probably needs to be.

2.  Normal.  Many people don't do well with eggs, partly because they overcook them.  I eat them every day, just about undercooked ie, still wet in appearance.  I find mixing in a little half and half and (per egg) microwaving them for 30 seconds, stir,  20 seconds, stir and then in 10 second increments until they are just wet works well.

I had reflux for a few years after RNY...  Before RNY my acid reflux was easily controlled with diet, after - I needed promised - omeprozole...once or sometimes 2 x a day.

Eggs - I could not eat Eggs until app 3-4 months post op.  And initially eggs would fill me up really fast. A few bites.  Now - its not a problem.

Is he on a PPI like Prevacid. He needs to be on something daily for a minimum of 3 months postop.

Most surgeons put their RNY/gastric bypass patients on a PPI immediately after surgery. Mine had all his RNY patients on one for TWO YEARS minimum. Has your brother talked with his surgeon about his reflux? While the RNY is considered the best form of WLS for treating reflux, it doesn't work for everyone, and even for those is does work for in the long run, reflux immediately post-op is not unusual.

Throwing up early out does seem to be pretty common, yes.

If he's on a PPI then it's obviously not working.  He needs to let his doctor know immediately about the problems he's having.  We can't allow horrible gastric reflux to go on without treatment because it will cause ulcers (much more serious in WL patients) and can eventually lead to cancer of the esophagus.
