Disability or Family Leave pay

Well, I guess stupid me for assuming disability meant you were injured and unable to work. Should have known the USA would have a different meaning of the word. 

And here I was thinking I elected to have weight loss surgery... 

And I think you'll find there are more people paying oop than you might think.

Yay for the original poster if she has it offered by her employer.

Family leave usually isn't paid - but secures your job while you are absent.  I also used short-term disability to fund my 2 month recovery time. Since it was taken out of my check post-tax, the benefits received weren't taxed at all, and it was very close to my regular paychecks.

Just be prepared to cover your own insurance premiums while you're out.  My employer kept my policy active, and had me repay out of my check over a few pay periods when I returned.
