reactive hyperglycemia after surgery

So I had my surgery in 2001 and things are great I lost 130lbs at the beginning and gained 20 lbs and leveled off.  The problem I am having now that when I eat I feel like crap.  A friend at work took my blood sugar level during one of these episodes 30 mins after I ate and it was a whooping 229.  within 2 hours I dropped to 63 and felt tired and hungry again.  It's almost like I'm diabetic with how my blood sugar reacts to food.  I don't eat dairy (lactose intolerant) and I almost never eat fried stuff but carbs will do me in in any amount.  I feel like I should go to my doctor hoping maybe there is something he can do so it doesn't spike and drop but I feel like he would think I am crazy because there isn't much information out there about people having this problem.  Has anyone else had this issue and what have you done to help with it?

Thanks in advance for any imput

Reactive hypoglycemia is becoming a fairly commonly seen thing for RNY'ers. I think you pretty much answered your own question though - "carbs will do me in in any amount". Cutting the carbs and ingesting them only when accompanied by protein can help with this.

I think if you look up "reactive hypoglycemia" (with an "o" - not "hyper") you'll find a ton of research and articles on it.

Reactive hyporglycemia is treated with diet and often a prescription for Metformin.  You do need to take care of it.  It could cause a dangerous situation if you drop too low while driving or during other activities.

It is common after RNY and doctors are well aware of the condition and of how to treat it.

Thanks for all the replies.  I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy.  Now the need to learn another new way of eating :-)

I deal with severe RH.

The only thing that works for it it's diet.

I eliminated grains, starchy carbs, and most fruits. IT is drastic, but it works.

Meat, fish, eggs, non starchy veggies, nuts...and sometimes ~ berries (limited ammount).

I follow a low carb ~ higher fat diet...that works wonderful for me.
