I drank a lot of Diet Coke before surgery and went back on it after three years.  I finally had to kick the habit again.  It is very addictive to me.  I still drink Diet Ginger Ale and Diet 7Up but nothing with caffeine.

I always enjoyed an occasional soda in the summer months... we will see if it bothers me this summer. My surgeon has revised his recommendations because of a bariatric convention he went to... you can have carbonation after 6 months, although he still doesn't recommend soda. I tried some seltzer after 3 months, just a couple sips, and I thought I was going to die... very uncomfortable.

I once craved one so bad, but I was afraid of the pain, from the carbonation, that I opened a can of coke zero, no caffeine, no calories, no sugar, and left it in the fridge for 3 days lol so it went flat.. drank a few sips... I realized it was gross and never had the urge again.

afterwards I thought that that could have been a #fattyproblems moment LOL

I loved diet coke pre-surgery.  It was one of the harder habits for me to break, right up there with not drinking with meals.  I had a few cravings here and there in the early months, but nothing I couldn't get over.  Now it's a non issue for me.  I don't even think about it.  Good luck!

About a month after surgery I craved Diet Coke SO bad. I went to a nutrition support group which said that when our magnesium is low we will have certain cravings, and soda was one of them! I started taking a 250 mg magnesium tablet every night, and no longer crave soda like I was - not sure if it was coincidence or not, but it has taperd off big time for me. Might be worth talking to your doc or nutritionist. Good luck!

I drank diet soda like a fiend prior to surgery. I gave it up completely and didn't have any until almost a year post surgery.  I checked with my surgeon and he said that for people like me with the VSG, as long as we didn't have problems with stomach upset, gas or bloating, it was okay to drink on occasion.

It might be head hunger and the thought of things you think you can never have again that are driving this craving.
