Buy the book Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies and read every page.  It will clear up your questions and give you all of the information you need.

Well, you've come to the right place for information and support. My advice:

Read, read, read.... here on the forums, ASMBS (link - https://asmbs.org/), other reputable medical sites, etc.

Once you've got the "lay of the land" here on the forums, start asking questions - people are more than willing to share advice and experiences with you.

I also second reading "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" as White Dove mentioned. It's "old", but still relevant.

Good luck :)

Well, clearly before you travel out of country to have surgery, you need to do some research.

Can you call local hospitals and see if they have local support groups you can attend pre-op, even if you don't use their surgeons?

my local area has several WLS groups that are not dependent on a specific doctor .... And I was able to meet many other patients and get lots of education and tips from real life patients.

That, along with reading and researching here helped prepare me for mysurgery and post op life.

Check out the Mexico board, and see if your Dr. has any reviews. I had my VSG done in Tijuana and it was a really great experience, and my surgeon was wonderful.

Congrats on setting a date for your big day :)

I had my surgery at the end of January, this year (4 months ago). I believe I paid about $4300. Bypass costs a little more, perhaps around $6k ballpark in TJ.
