New to weight loss surgery need advice
Since you're already decided that you need a malabsorptive surgery, here are some things to think about when decided between the RNY and the DS:
Both cause permanent malabsorption of certain vitamins and minerals. Exactly how much and what supplements YOU will need to take will depend on YOUR individual lab results. There are lists, some very good, of suggested supplements out there, but in the end, YOU have to watch your own labs, spot trends, and adjust your intake accordingly.
The malabsorption of calories is only temporary with the RNY. for most people, it lasts about 18-24 months, for proteins and complex carbs. (Fat is different---even RNYers malabsorb a small per centage of fat forever.) With the DS, malabsorption of a significant per centage of calories is permanent. Exactly how much you malabsorb is individual, but the 'average' DSer only absorbs about 50% of proteins, 60% of complex carbs, and 20% of fats. Thjs means DSers need to consume a LOT of protein and fat, so the post-op 'diet' is pretty different between the two.
The DS retains the pylorus, and all normal stomach function. The RNY does not. The RNY leaves behind a huge, blind, remnant stomach. The DS does not. DSers don't really have any increased risks for taking NSAIDs; RNYers do. With either, absorption of extended-release medications may be decreased.

Congratulations on making the decision to have surgery. One note, though, is confirm your insurance coverage first.
Only other suggestion.........read, read, read, and then read some more. These forums will answer just about every question you have. If you think of a question, first use the SEARCH feature -- the magnifying glass at the right top of the page. It will answer questions like: Best Protein Shake? Protein Samples? Pre-op diet? Post-op diet? Pureed stage? Average weight loss? Stalls? Etc., Etc., Etc. If you don't see your question on the forums, and you've used the search feature, ask away! I say that because if you review the forums, you'll see just about every question asked and answered on a regular basis.
