It depends on your surgery and if there are complications. I had RNY and only stayed in the hospital overnight.

I had VSG.  I was in the hospital for about 36 hours total.  (Surgery bright and early on Thursday morning and I was released on Friday evening.)

After waiting in the morning I was taken back for surgery.  I got an IV and was put out.  I woke up in recovery and was moved to a room for the rest of my stay.  I walked as much as I could.  I couldn't drin****il I'd had my barium swallow leak test the next morning, but I got wet swabs for my very dry mouth.

After the leak test, I was allowed liquids and taken off all the IVs.  I kept walking as much as I could and started sipping as much as possible as well.

Then I went home and resumed walking and sipping.

Overall, the whole process was really easy!

Hi @David. As others have said your stay will be variable. In my case (RnY) I had surgery in the morning, and I was ready to go home that afternoon. They kindly requested I stay the night though. There are things you can do to make the stay easier. For example, do a great job on your pre-surgery diet then walk, walk, walk and sip, sip sip.

Depends on the surgery and your general health.  I was banded and was cleared to leave the hospital 4 hours post-op,

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Hello & Welcome to the forum.

The hospital stay really varies on the type of surgery & how well you recuperate afterwards. I had the VSG. I was in on a Friday & out by Sunday, no complications. At the time I had to wait to do a leak test the next day b4 I could start drinking liquids, I didn't drink enough so I had to stay an extra night, but I really needed it. I was very, very tired, but by the time Sunday came around I was good to go & I couldn't wait to go home!

No one surgery is better than the other, what works for one may not work for another. T-Rebel

Welcome

I had VSG surgery on Thursday and was discharged Saturday morning.  The pain was minimal and I didn't take pain meds once I was home.
