I was scheduled for my first appointment with the surgeon on May 4th.  When I attempted to check in, they told me my appointment had been cancelled.  I did not cancel it so they said someone would be out for me shortly.  Bypassing all of the details, before my exam was completed the doctor came back with the Clinic Administrator and told me I was rejected from the surgery and 3 days later, I still have no explanation regarding why.  My hopes were really up and this has put me in a real tailspin.  Wish I had known that there was such lack of communication and hiding of information.

They do a lot of surgeries but no idea why I was rejected when my physician of over 15 years recommended the surgery.  Hope this makes it past the moderator.  If not, I will know why this forum didn't prepare me for this being a possible outcome.

Good luck, everyone!

Pardon, but I'm not familiar with Unity point but I assume it's a Bariatric center?  If so, can you go to another surgeon?

Only 2 bariatric clinics in town.  This one was supposed to be the best.....  not sure what to think about the other.  My insurance is very restrictive on what providers they will cover.  Even though there are 2 surgeons in the clinic, this is a rejection from the clinic so no dice.

Does your insurance cover WLS? And assuming this UnityPoint is a bariatric surgery center, do they accept your insurance?  Is your BMI over 40?  Just looking for clues!

Like Kat just mentioned, ask your PCP for another referral, or ask him/her why you were rejected.

Good luck.

-Unity point and this forum are two seperate entities. I dont understand why you are mixing an internet forum with some sort of hospital/surgeons office.

And if you had been on the RNY boards, you would see people are often denied the surgery by their insurance and they frequently have to "fight".

So-what are you going to do? You need to find out WHY (insurance not cover it? Not medically necessary because you are underweight or dont have enough co-morbidities?). You need to know why so if you do decide to FIGHT, you will  know what basis the fight will be on.

Yep, The Surgeons only want to get paid, if they don't do the surgery, they don't, so I doubt they rejected you.  You might want to call your insurance and find out the details because more than likely they are the ones *****jected the referral.

That said the clinic administrator should have had those details and it would've been nice if she shared them with you.  If you don't feel supported by your program maybe another is an option.  You'd hate to do something this big and not have a good support network for aftercare .

I disagree with your first point. Many surgeons would likely reject a patient if, for example, they felt the procedure would not be safe, or there would be serious compliance issues (active eating disorder, drug abuse, etc.).

I have talked to the insurance company.  They haven't received anything from the bariatric clinic so it was within the UnityPoint review committee who met before I even had my first appointment.  This seems very strange to me.

Because this forum does not have access to the exclusions of your insurance policy, know your medical history or offer medical advice.

It's time to put on your big girl panties and make a few phone calls, starting with your insurance company to find out if WLS is covered.  Just because you were referred to a bariatric surgeon/center doesn't mean it's an automatic process.
