Going back on meds, cymbalta in particular, AFRAID of regaining weight

Hi everyone, I had gastric sleeve in December, I am down 52 lbs.

I've been off all of my meds since then as well, however, with my history of fibromyalgia, the stress of my job and just the transitioning to this new life, my anxiety and aching is becoming more than I can bear. I've decided with great hesitation to restart my Cymbalta but with the side effects being weight loss or gain, I am terrified of regaining. I know for a fact that I gained weight on lyrica and Elavil in the past when I started taking them with my Cymbalta, which I definitely I know I am ok with not going back on those meds. Has anyone here continued or went back on their Cymbalta and can you share your experience?

thank you

jennifer

I started Cymbalta about two years ago, so several years after my WLS.  I didn't gain weight.  I have gained on other meds in the past, though.  Meds can affect different people differently, obviously.  If you feel Cymbalta might help you, then I would start it and watch your weight carefully and talk to your doctor if you start gaining.  Try to be careful about your eating and make sure you get some exercise if you are able to, also, of course.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

I had my RNY in September and I have stayed on my Cymbalta all the way through.  I don't think it has affected me as I have lost over 140 lbs so far.  If you need it, use it.

Good Luck,

Eric

I have taken Cymbalta and not had an issue with it. I did have one medication that did cause an issue... I'm sorry that I don't recall the name of that. At any rate, I discussed my concerns with my Dr. and we agreed that I would try the medication... any new medication that I try that may have an impact on my weight... and I always ask if a medication may have an impact on my weight or is suitable for RNY patients. At any rate, I kept a log of my weight for a  4 week trial to determine if I was seeing a weight gain. If I say a consistent uptick in my weight, we changed meds. That was not necessary with Cymbalta for me. I also recall seeing a study that showed that patients on SSRIs tend to do well with absorbtion by the time that they are 6 months post op. In the study, I recall that most patients were obtaining the full impact of the medication since their intestinal system has adjusted to it's new configuration.

Wishing you all the best,

Cymbalta hasn't caused me any weight gain either, now lyrica did but not the cymbalta. They have to put the warnings on the drugs but they don't always happen to everyone.

I've been taking Cymbalta and Welbutrin for almost 5 years, not long after my surgery, and it didn't affect my weight loss or maintenance.
