wt gain after thyroidectomy

I had wt loss surgery in 2002 and kept over 100lbs off until thyroid cancer/thyroidectomy in 2014 (I was hypothyroid prior to wls)

I continue to gain weight even tho I eat very little! I can not find an endocrinologist that understands this weight gain is unacceptable!! I am always tired, with brain fog hair loss anxiety and quite irritable.

I need suggestions on open minded endocrine doctors near Kalamazoo,Michigan or perhaps a bariatric doctor that understands treatment of post cancer thyroidectomy combined with post bariatric surgery!

At this point I would even consider redoing the weight loss surgery if that is even an option! I've gained almost 50 pounds and it isn't slowing down!

I'm hoping someone can offer insight and advice asap!

Hi Deb,

Usually your surgeons know of specialist to refer their patients to when we develop complications.  If your surgeon's office can't help you I suggest you go to Grand Rapids. I grew up in Kalamazoo and there were several times we had to go to GR for medical issues.  Before you travel call Bronson and Borgess and speak to someone in their Bariatric Departments. If they don't have any Endocrine Doctors then call this group in GR.

Are you taking a higher dose of synthroid? People who have their thyroid destroyed usually do just fine once they are taking a high enough dose of synthroid. The symptoms you describe are ones that commonly accompany low thyroid hormone levels. Redoing your surgery will not help you until you get your condition under control. Also, make sure you are not taking iron or calcium supplements within four hours of taking synthroid because they will block the synthroid from being absorbed.
