I have a surgery date -- when is a good time to let work know? The surgery is set for May 28.
How much notice is appropriate for work? At my first surgical consultation meeting, I was told they recommend four weeks' time off. I want to be considerate to my supervisor and co-workers, but I have preop appointments on May 19 and 20 (the surgery is set for May 28) and I suppose the surgery could end up being postponed. I don't anticipate that happening, but who knows?
The waiting seemed to take forever (I began this process in January 2014), but things seem to be moving quickly now: the insurance approval took just a week, which really surprised me. I'm feeling a little nervous, as I've had this job for just 5 months. But I work for a health care organization, and I'm hoping there won't be too much resistance.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing your wisdom and your experiences. Your posts have been invaluable in helping me prepare for this day : )

I think you should tell them ASAP so they have time to prepare but, if you are worried about the reaction, I would think two weeks notice is plenty of time.
Remember, you don't have to tell them what the surgery is for if that makes you uncomfortable. Just say that you have to have surgery and it's been scheduled for May 28th and you will need 4 weeks recovery time.
Thank you for your suggestions. After checking the employee information section online, I found out that I'm not eligible for FMLA leave as I haven't yet worked there 12 months. I just notified my supervisor and asked for her assistance in applying for short-term disability. That scary part is done, at least : )
