rejected foods

I am in the approval process but have not been to the bypass doctor yet. Are there any foods with the bypass that you can't tolerate?? Broccoli, apples, carrots? Do they get stuck?

It depends on a person.

I am 7 years post opp and i can't eat some foods. Raw carrots - no go, most raw veggies like broccoli, cabvage - no go. Pasta - no way - unless i am OK to be in pain...

most raw veggies are difficult to digest for me, i may have a few butes here and there, but not much. They cause way too much gas.

Everyone is different but usual all agree meats have to be moist or with sauce. Eggs do not always agree with me but others haveno problem. Unfortunately this will be a learning process after surgery to see what you will tolerate.

You will probably have some things that don't agree with you, but there is no way of knowing ahead of time. I love green salads and raw veggies and for me I am totally fine with it. Many people love eating cold cuts, and doing 'roll-ups'...they don't really agree with me. Tuna salad and I are kind of touch and go, but I am fine with chicken salad.

The 'getting stuck' is more of a learning curve. Eat slow, chew well, take small bites and make sure everything is moist... and you shouldn't have problems. Sometimes I eat too fast, don't chew well enough or something is dry... and I've had problems... totally my fault...

Everyone is right, we are all different.  You will have to wait to see what affects you.  Meats were the worst for me.  Also please note as you are buying items getting prepared for surgery your taste buds might change and foods/proteins you liked before surgery you may not like after.  So don't stock up on too much.

We suggest you post on the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum (RNY) to reach out to those that had the same surgery type as you.

Good Luck

As others have said, there really is no way to tell pre-op which, if any, foods your body will reject.  And there's no way to tell post-op either, aside from trial and error.

Personally I can no longer tolerate white rice or white bread, which in my world is actually a bonus since I was a HUGE carb lover pre-op.  I also have severe dumping reactions, even at six years plus out, and  reactive hypoglycemia.  Fortunately both of those two things can be avoided for the most part by not consuming simple sugars.

Try not to worry too much ahead of time.  If you do end up eating something you can't tolerate you'll get over whatever side effects you have and simply will learn to avoid that particular food in the future.

Best of luck to you in your journey,

amy

For a long time I got sick every time I ate chicken, which was really difficult since I love chicken.

I could eat steaks all day but a drumstick sent me to the bathroom.

Because I love chicken so much I didn't give up and every so often I would try again.  Over time I stopped having problems and now I eat chicken with no issues.

Once in a great while I will start to feel sick after I eat it but that is rare and very mild.

Other than that there are more food I choose not to eat then I can't eat.

I could probably eat most things, other than sugar which  makes me dump, and I have found that eating things with gluten causes me intestinal issues so I avoid that, but those are pluses in my book since those were the main ingredients in the recipe for my morbid obesity.

After surgery, certain foods (eggs, tuna, cucumbers and fresh tomatoes) would bother me.  I would wait a bit, try again, and eventually, I have found that there's very few things I cannot tolerate.  However, I have been 100% on plan -- so I really don't know if I "dump" or can eat things like potatoes, bread, etc.

The only thing that sometimes gives me trouble are cucumbers with the skin.  Other than that -- and even that is only rarely, I find that I am able to eat everything on plan.
