Craving Sugar

I am 2 1/2 years out from a RNY. I am down to 121 from 250. I have a huge sweet tooth and I need help and support getting back on trac. Anyone a ways out from surgery have any inspiration or ideas on kicking this. I am in the same cycle of eating a piece of candy and then guilt. I get mad at myself for eating it because I was totally clean and never touched sugar for the first year. Thank you for any constructive ideas or support you might have.😊

For me, sugar begets sugar ...... 1 today leads to 2 tomorrow.

The best way for me to break the sugar habit is t go towards fatty food for a few days.

I allow myself some cheese and nuts that I don't normally buy .... And I have those in place of sugar

Within a few days, the sugar craving have subsided and I wean off the extra calories from the cheese and nuts pretty easily.

Also, after dinner, I brush, floss and gargle ... I turn off the kitchen lights and "close" the kitchen.

Once I have a fresh, clean mouthing is easier to stop eating for the day.

Exercise .. daily gentle exercise .  Something about even getting a walk in or gardening really quells the cravings ( sunshine ?) .  I don't beat myself up for eating when I'm hungry .. but if its a fatty sugary treat I want I try to postpone eating it till the next morning when the calories will get burned off in he course of the day .

I also prefer to eat some " carby" fat free comfort food that lets me be hunger free for many hours - rice and beans is a favorite .  A few days ago I regheated some homemade pea soup with boars head ham chunks and threw a bit of cooked rice into it ... I was amazingly full , energized and craving free all day ( but gassy) .

For me , planting  stevia everywhere in the garden ( the sweet leaf plant some people use for even sweetening tea) really helps - I munch on that and mint all day when I'm outside .  Herbs areVERY healthy for you and taste great too...

I have really had to fight the carbs and sugars.  I read an article last week that if you are craving carbs and sugars.....you are not getting enough protein in.  If you up your protein...it will keep you fuller and more satisfied where you won't want the carbs.  My problem is I sit behind a switchboard all day and I eat out of boredom.  I finally cleaned everything out of arms reach.....so I wouldn't be snacking on it just because it was there.....packed my frig in my office full of protein drinks, water and cheese.

For me personally, eating sugar and carbs makes me CRAVE sugar and carbs!!! Try to cut both from your diet for at least 2 weeks. I bet your craving for both will begone! If you continue to give into your cravings for sugar you risk gaining weight. And trust me, it is much easier to overcome sugar/carb cravings than it is to lose the gained weight that comes from it :( Best of luck!

Some of us are addicted to sugar.  Our bodies crave it, and once we allow it to come in, it's really hard to stop.  But, clearly, we CAN stop again, just like we did right after our surgery.  I use the support of OA and my WLS support group to stay abstinent from sugar (now a year and a half clean).  To me, it's like alcohol or any other drug.  I can't consume it safely. I make a daily commitment to an accountability partner.

I eat chocolate every day.  I plan for it.  No guilt.  I would rather not be alive then give up chocolate.  Seriously.

The only way I can control sugar is by keeping it out of my house but if some "sneaks" in I have to clean house again. Go on a complete sugar free diet for a couple of weeks, heavy on the protein and healthy fats to help with the cravings and just stick to it for 10-14 days until I detox from the sugar. Then I'm safe until I fall off the wagon again, which I am sure to do, since I am a mere mortal and prone to error. I've also read if your vitamin D is low it will cause sugar cravings so make sure you are getting all of your vitamins in. It sucks but the only way to deal with it is face it and stare it down. It only takes one bite and I can be off to the races again!
