Vitamins after RNY

I had bypass surgery on April 10, 2015. I was instructed to take two 10,000 mcg biotin to combat hair loss. Do I take both at the same time or space them out like my bari life vitamins?

Hair loss after surgery is caused by a process called Telogen Effluvium - biotin won't help with this.   Also 20k mcg is a lot and may result in hair growing in places you weren't planning.

If you would like to risk it, I would take them in two lots.

Hi Val,

Congratulations on your surgery!  Some members claim taking biotin and using Nixon helped with hair loss and others said nothing helped.  We suggest you post this on the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum (RNY) to reach out to those that had the same surgery as you.

Good Luck

Nixon?

I think you meant NIOXIN.

Nixon was losing a lot of hair up top, so I wouldn't take that. Ford, Eisenhower -- Republicans are bald. Take some JFK or Clinton. Those dudes had some hair.

I didn't take anything to combat hair loss and I did go through a hair loss phase about 4 months or so after surgery.  It went on for a couple of months and then stopped.  Now I just lose hair like I did before surgery.  Like Kim said, Biotin won't really help with hair loss, but it might help with nail strength and too high of a dose can encourage hair growth in unwanted places.  :D

I strongly urge you to do some research about vitamins. BariLife aren't really all that good, and you probably need to supplement some vitamins and minerals separately. You will malabsorb vitamins for the rest f your life, and you REALLY need to stay on top of them. You need to learn how to read your lab results and adjust your intake accordingly, too. You're probably going to need to get the fat-soluble vitamins in a 'dry' formulation, too.

I took one 10,000 mcg biotin hoping it would help with the regrowth and ended up with thick, coarse hairs growing on my chin and neck.

I don't recommend biotin.  It won't prevent hair loss since that is a result of telogen effluvium.  It usually happens sometime after the third month post surgery, and lasts until the ninth month.  Better haircuts can help, but no amount of supplements is going to prevent it if it's going to happen.

Caveat emptor!

Do you work for Vita4Life? I ask because this is the second post linking to the product that you've made (and I've read) just this morning alone.
