50 and over??
I was 2 days before my 56th birthday when I had surgery. I wasn't diabetic, but many people who get this surgery are. That is part of why they get it. There is usually a very complete medical work-up before surgery to rule any potential problems out. When you say 'physician' are you talking about the primary care or a surgeon? If it is a primary care they just may not be very knowledgeable in this area.

I was 52 when I had surgery. I've lost 149# +/- and my diabetes is essentially in remision (no meds, perfect fasting glucose and A1c). My PCP has told me that he wishes I could speak to some of his other obese patients.
Being over 50, with diabetes, can't be the only reason his Dr is not recomending surgery. A person in their 50's has a lot of life left in them that can be improved and extended by surgery. I would either push back, get more information or find a new Dr.
I was exactly one month from my 53rd birthday when I had my DS. My recovery was quite uneventful.
I did not have diabetes but did take Metformin for about 6 months before my surgery.
I have another 50# to go.

Hi I'm 61 with high blood pressure and having the surgery on May 1/15. I hope all goes well. I'm starting to get nervous.
