I do apples/peanut butter pre-workout now. Very helpful.

There is a ton of sugar in apples and peanut butter. It's not something you'll want to do after surgery. Too many carbs, too many calories. It's going to make you want more.

Everything works for a while. Fun size three musketeers will work for a while after surgery. Doesn't make them a good choice.

Habits will catch up to you. One tablespoon of peanut butter a day will make you gain ten pounds in a year.

I hear you and appreciate the input. But I don’t agree. Good news: This ain’t Sparta. We could disagree and all would still be well.

But about that peanut analogy. It makes sense and might be mathematically correct, but it’s far from true. It’s the kind of device marketers use to trash one product and show the benefits of theirs. It does not take into consideration a wide array of very likely factors. It’s propaganda and doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. For instance, sounds like someone multiplied the calories in 1 tbsp. of peanut butter by a certain rate of consumption to come up with a nice, powerful number to get everyone’s attention. There’s the fundamental (and perhaps deliberately flawed) assumption that those calories aren’t expended. So where’s the part of the equation that factors in the use of those calories/energy?

The equation that would apply to my situation would need that missing piece. The protein, carbs and sugar in the apple/peanut combo is the perfect mix for energy for my high-intensity workouts.  I build lean muscle every month and blast fat. Might I gain 10 lbs a year? Maybe, but it won't be from apples and peanut butter.

But having said all that, I do come here for info and support. I’ll embrace the best ideas any day of the week. Share what works for you.

To the OP: I hope this hasn’t jacked your thread. It’s a worthwhile conversation and an old debate about exercise and carbs. There are varying arguments. Hope you find one that works for you.

Meg, may I ask when you had your surgery?

Sure you may. But no silly Internet fight with strangers for me, though. Thanks.

I'm out!

Meg had surgery in August 2014.

I don't know why she refused to answer your question

So she is 8 months out and an expert.  I look forward to the next year watching the vegans process and all these people who seem to know it all. I am curious as to why she didn't want to answer the question. Seems like she is hiding something. I was very friendly in the delivery of my question. To bad she couldn't be polite in her response. Those apples and peanut butter are going to catch up to her and because of her response I see a "I tolda so" in the near future.

It kinda surprised me too.  You were exceptionally polite  and were shut down with a curt and non-responsive reply.
