Do I still need tyhroid medication after RNY surgery?

Hello Everyone!  I need help.  I am 3 1/2 years post op RNY surgery.  I lost 90 lbs.  After I lost weight the doctor said I no longer needed thyroid medicine.  My new family doctor did test and said I am fine but he was puzzled why I was taken off of it because of weight loss.  Keep in mind I have gained 20 lbs and I feel terrible and have no energy.  Does any one have any answers?  Also I am 52 and I have not gone through the change yet, but my hormones are racing!  Could it be a combination of thyroid trouble and pre-menopause?  I have an appt. with RHY doctor at the end of the month for overdue blood work.  Thanks for your help!

I have never heard of anyone being taken off of their thyroid meds after surgery.  I think your dose may have needed adjusting, but to stop taking Synthroid or whatever it was sounds dangerous.  Your thyroid is malfunctioning with or without surgery.  I have always understood it as this is something I'll have to take for life.  I went from 100 mcgs to 125 mcgs after surgery (probably due to the malabsorption).  I'd go find a good endocrinologist and keep on top of your bloodwork!

If you have a legitimate underactive thyroid -- as opposed to some rogue doctors who, despite all medical evidence that it not only doesn't help but can cause all sorts of other problems, put overweight patients on thyroid meds to try to help control their weight -- losing weight is NOT going to affect your thyroid levels OR your need for thyroid meds!

How much Synthroid (or whichever supplement) were you taking?  If you were taking a very small dose, it may not have been doing much anyway and so not taking it might not make much difference.

Also, different doctors have different ideas about where they want their patients in the "normal" range, so it it possible that your two doctors differ in that respect and that you are within the normal range both with or without the meds.

What you are describing, however, are "textbook" symptoms of menopause.  Rather than "racing" hormones, you likely have depleted ones.  A simple blood draw will tell you whether your are peri menopausal or menopausal, but at 52, menopause related changes are far more likely the problem than the thyroid, especially since one doctor has already told you that your thyroid levels are ok.

My surgeon told me before surgery I would still need thyroid med.  My surgeon and PC check my thyroid yearly.  If you are fine now, maybe you never needed it in the first place.  I've taken thyroid med since I was 19 and that was a lonnnnnnnnng time ago.
