There used to be a guy on here who said he burned 4000 calories per day on his bike ride - I wonder where he is today?   I guess quite a few pounds heavier than he was when he started his bike riding!

Why would you gloat about that?

I have to say, exercise has been responsible for a BIG part of my pre-op weight loss, but not just because of the calories burned. I play Dance Dance Revolution and have progressed from burning ~200 calories an hour to 700-800 in the past 6 months (according to the game's calculations, so take that with a grain of salt). I sometimes eat some of those calories back, but less than half, and most importantly for my weight loss, I play DDR in the evenings before bed when my desire to snack mindlessly is highest. It gives me something else to do besides eating, and it's great at killing my cravings and providing an endorphin-filled distraction.

Food intake certainly is more of a factor for weight loss than calories burned for exercise, but let's not downplay how much exercise can help control food intake!

It has certainly been my experience. I haven't really exercised in about a year and have maintained my weight.

I went through this while training for my First Half Ironman.  The issues with new athletes is there is a ton of advice out there on what works"best"  From the whole you burned 1000 calories on that run so now you get to eat them back to the your a runner you need carbs so potatoes and pasta!!! Let's also not for get the FAT BURN Zone on the treadmill.

How you body processes calories and what sources your body processes depend on a lot of factors.  While exercising your body will tap Glycogen, Carbs (Sugars) and Fat depending on the intensity of your activity.  If you are running a balls out 5K your body is burning glycogen, if you are running a Half marry odds are you are more in the Fat zone but people still utilize sugar based supplements.  Timing and source of calories also will play a factor in this equation.

When I started my athletic journey I had nutritionists, other runners and trainers saying you need to eat this before a session, Typically it was a Multi grain waffle with PB and Banana all needed groups represented. I felt great and was able to finish my sessions.  Long sessions had me doing a GU Gel every 45 minutes for anything beyond 90 minutes.

Today I still train for Half Ironman I live a low carb

Oh yeah...that's been my experience as well. I just finished my 6th half marathon and managed to gain 5 pounds while training for it, as did my fellow runner-race partner. I think there's a lot going on...age..extra water weight in muscles...extra calories while training (not intentional)....:-)

I started running 4 years ago to boost weight loss that had slowed after surgery. Didn't really work scale wise, but i toned up quite a bit. I wouldn't trade being a runner for being thinner. I feel healthy and fit!

Thanks Grim:

It's very true- when I work out at the gym my muscles get defined and I get firmer and SMALLER but the weight on the scale will go up, because muscle always weighs more than fat. I judge my journey by my clothing size and could care less about the scale.  I am 5'3 weigh about 125 and wear a woman's petite or small. My jean size is 32 X 29. I go by how healthy and firm and strong I am...Too many people get "hung up" on scale numbers. My best friend who also had RNY weighs about the same as me but wears a womans M to L and is honestly about 2-3 sizes larger because she never exercises and has a lot of extra skin (Not her fault. You really can't do anything about extra loose skin except have surgery)

Anyone who has WLS should take your words wisely. I only weigh myself MAYBE 1 time a month (or less) or whenever I have a Dr's appointment. Go by your size and how your clothes feel folks. You'll have a lot less stress. Grim posted a great article.

Warmly,

Jackie

Just to clarify on one of my Pet Peeves.

Muscle does not weigh more than fat.  1 pound of muscle weighs the exact same as 1 pound of fat.

The reality is that Muscle is more dense than fat.  1 pound of muscle will fit in a much smaller area than 1 pound of fat.
