Protein without shakes?
on 4/1/15 4:04 am
I am 1 year out, and get the vast majority of my protein from meat, cheese, fish, chicken and yogurt. I will add carb free protein powder to my yogurt, and chocolate protein powder occasionally to my decaf coffee, but that's about it. For me, it takes a lot of planning and being mindful to always eat the protein on my plate first. Everything else I love (vegetables other carbs), has to wait if I have space. I had to weigh and measure everything to make sure I was getting the amount of protein my surgeon wants (60-80g/day). Finally, I log my food in Fitbit to keep track of my total calories and protein.. With that said, my current eating plan gives me around 1300-1500 calories and 70-90g protein per day.
Am I correct you are 6 weeks out? Has the surgeon cleared you for soft foods?
I would put vanilla protein in my oatmeal in the AM. Also, in my greek yogurt (zero fat) with a small amount of fruit. Beans with cheese, string cheese, chicken cut up fine, was my friend also. Post this on the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum (RNY) to reach out to those that had the same surgery as you.

One of my favorite recipes was
Almost home made chicken tacos
1 store cooked rotissary chicken
1 pkg Multi Grain toritillas
1 pkg shredded LF cheese
1 bunch cilantro
1 can bush's brand pintos
1 can Rotel original tomatoes with chilis
Add the can of tomatoes to the beans, bring to boil.
Warm tortillas in the microwave and chop the cilantro. Serve it family style, the chicken on a platter just peel off chicken, place in warm tortilla sprinkle with cheese and cilantro. you can serve beans on the side but my family just puts a scoop on the taco.
Keep us posted on how you are doing!

Yes, you are correct. I am 6 weeks out. I live in Ontario, Canada so I probably won't even see my surgeon again unless I develop some complication. My bariatric clinic provided us with a great book detailing how to advance our diet after surgery. I spent the first 3 weeks on soft foods then added a new food each day as tolerated. I am lucky at this point that I have lots of protein choices. The problem being I don't know if I can even get that much protein in while awake. LOL! Thanks for mentioning eggfaces site. I love it!
Hi there,
My surgery was 2/11/15. RNY. I attempt to get most of my protein from food also. Seafood is very high in protein, shrimp is one of my favorites, also do alot of raw fish. I made chili over the weekend. kidney beans and ground turkey so also high in protein. I usually can do aobut 2.5 ounces before i am full. I little more on the sushi since so soft. I now longer can do shake type protein drinks but synthrax makes a great iced tea and lemonade with 24 grams of protein that is excellent. You can order those on line.
oh and yogurt has a ton of protein.
hang in there.

You can get a 10 pack of assorted flavors of the Syntrax Nectar protein drinks. Check this out: http://www.mybariatricpantry.com/SYNTRAX_NECTAR_PROTEIN_POWDER_SAMPLES_p/nectar-sample.htm
I love Syntrax Nectar Fuzzy Navel. I had RNY in June of 2008. I have been drinking the Syntrax Nectar Fuzzy Navel everyday for about 5 years or more. There are many flavors, but that is my favorite. I had reached the point where I couldn't stomach another vanilla or chocolate flavored protein drink and then I found this. I also pick up a container of the chocolate fudge and will occasionally make a "hot chocolate" protein drink by adding the prepared chocolate protein with Swiss Miss diet hot chocolate. It's good during the winter time when I want something hot to drink since I'm not a coffee or hot tea drinker.

I drink coffee in the morning, and I add protein to that to help increase my daily protein. I add 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder to 3 Tbs of creamer (I use sugar free/fat free variety). You will blend the protein into the creamer with a spoon... It will be thick at first, but will smooth out to about the consistency of cake batter. Then slowly pour (or brew from a Keurig) into the cup, stirring constantly. :)
Good luck!

I bought sugar-free banana flavored syrup and use vanilla syntrax powder and I add PB2 with ice and almond milk. I am over a year out and most of the time I can get all of my protein from food.
I usually do this when I want something sweet or if I am running around.
