Revision on 08/27/15

I'm almost 9 years out from my first surgery.

On one hand, I don't regret having WLS, since it let me experience being thin for a while.  I'm now more determined than ever to get back to that point.

On the other hand, I wish I'd chosen RNY or waited a while and chosen the VSG instead of the lap-band.  When I was banded, the VSG was still considered investigational by my insurance company, so I only had the choice of the lap-band or RNY.  The band was not a good choice.  At the time, the stats were looking promising, but we now know that the complication and revision rate for the lap-band is terrible.  I've had my band replaced once and I'm trying to get converted to RNY.

APPROVED for revision to RNY! Awaiting surgery date!

Not one regret! I have my life back.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

I can't believe how significantly my life changed post op .  I lost lifelong GERD, pre-diabetes, sleep apnea and  low self esteem due to a lifetime of struggling with my weight .  I gained ( and lost ) a husband, gained and kept a beautiful home, started a successful business, insisted on more parity respect and financial fairness from my family and most importantly feel beautiful and far healthier and happier every single day . I am far stronger physically and emotionally than before and finally feel ready to truly start achieving  the  lifelong dreams I almost gave up on .

Just offering a thought - people still engaged in this forum 2 years out are a small portion of post opera that far out.  They are all still engaged in maintaining their health.  Because of this the regrets are probably much slimmer.

If if you took a poll of people unengaged in their health also very late post op the results could be different.

if you use the tool and pay attention there does not seem to be much regret.  :)

I'm 8 years out from having the band placed. Would I do weight loss surgery?  Yes!  Would I do the band?  Absolutely not.  I have lots of complications, pain, and am stuck on a diet that makes losing almost impossible.  But I'm having revision surgery done to RNY and I feel confident.  I should have done RNY from the start.

I'm 11+ years out from my DS. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I encourage you to visit the Revision forum here, the Regrets forum, and all of the surgery-specific forums. I believe a major part of long-term success at this is choosing the right form of WLS for YOU. We're all different, and got fat for different reasons. Each form of WLS will require you to make some changes in your daily life, so it's important to understand these changes when choosing your surgery type.
