Green smoothies yay or nay for you?
I will gladly pair up with the Beef and Pork lobbyists and work on this.
"Bacon it possible" - that's my tagline.
In all seriousnes - I watched a friend go vegan trying to lose weight, and wound up qualifying for wls a year or so later, totally addicted to all things carb. Why not? It's all she's eaten for more than a year!
I also have serious concerns over soy as a protein source and the hormonal issues it causes. This would be a major staple for a vegan.

I love "Bacon it Possible!" I'm seeing t-shirts and bumper stickers.
I know one person who works really hard at being a vegan, and probably does as well as you possibly can. But all the others vegans I've ever encountered eat a lot of crap. I refer to them as "French Fry Vegans," since that seems to be their staple.
I too have major issues with a soy based diet. But we can rationalize any choice by demonizing others. Fruits and veggies? Dangerous levels of pesticides and other chemicals, as well as things like e coli. Meat? Steroids and hormones.
The debate will go on forever. We just have to find what will work for us. Me? I'm Bacon it Possible.

I like green smoothies too but I had to cut them out. My smoothies ended up being too fruity & less greeny. lol
Besides smoothies usually have too many carbs & sugar in it, I'm guessing you put those unflavored powders in them to reach protein goals.
My dr wanted me to get my protein from dense protein rather than protein shakes & definitely not smoothies.
I understand if you don't want to get your protein from meat, but it can be kinda hard, especially if you want to have that satiety. It looks like you want to stay away from dense protein like fish & meat, you're gonna have a hard road ahead of you if you cut out all dense protein & stick with liquid calories. Definitely check with your dr & nutritionist. I'm not saying it's impossible just harder. Definitely have all your food ducks lined up in a row, research, etc b4 going under the knife!
There's a vegetarian forum, maybe try to get some pointers there., & yes it's kinda weird you like the shake as long as you can't see it. :)

I think green smoothies are super healthy -- my son has one almost every day.
At my maintenance weight, I could justify having one, but I am much MUCH more happy to eat the solid fruit. I follow a relatively high carb diet compared to most on here (in maintenance) and have 2-3 servings of whole fruit every day.
Drinking calories is not a good habit to get into. The only calories I drink at my protein shake (20 g protein for 100 - 120 calories) and some milk in my coffee.
I would recommend keeping the blended fruit / fruit juices out of your diet until you have reach maintenance. But I completely agree that eating real, whole foods is the way to go! If you don't want to eat meat, you will just have to be much more proactive in finding other protein sources (dairy, tofu, tempeh, beans etc.).
Good luck!
I just can't bring myself to make green smoothies. I have added a handful of spinach to a protein shake and didn't taste the spinach at all. The color didn't change at all, but I see people at work with the totally green shakes and there's no way I could drink them.
I am 6 1/2 years out having RNY. I eat vegetables and fruits and have had no problem. I tend to eat berries mostly and only once a day.
Follow your doctor's plan. I wonder about the person beating you to a pulp with her comments. She is really being harsh and it's uncalled for.

You being 6+ years out is great, but you yourself have to realize that high carb based drinks are not good for weightloss in the early stages.
Her comments were not harsh, uncalled for, nor was she beating the OP up. She was trying to explain why it is not a good idea to be drinking the smoothies.
I just amazes me when people don't get the answers they want, they just ignore the honest and truthful ones.
