Green smoothies yay or nay for you?
My point, which I guess I didn't make very well, was that I plan to reset my eating patterns now for after surgery to include the healthy, whole foods rather than the breads, pastas, and pastries that got me fat in the first place. And to continue that pattern after it being approved by my doctor to do so. I'm not saying no protein, I've never said that. I am saying plant based protein For Me. I also know that protein is needed after WLS, I've never disputed that fact. I just don't want to eat a lot of animal flesh. Yes I understand that plant sourced protein has more carbs than flesh. I also plan to work with, not against, my doctor and I will find a doctor who is willing to work with my choices. My results may differ from the norm, but I know what I am looking to accomplish with VSG, which is to get me to a healthy weight so I can basically get a chance to start again using good, proper nutrition to fuel myself and make myself as healthy as possible and keep all the hereditary diseases that run in my family at bay for as long as possible.
There may not be a lot of scientific research and studies available regarding vegetarian/vegan lifestyles after WLS because it isn't usually given as an option to patients. If patients want to follow that path they have to inform their doctors so they can work in conjunction and cooperation. It took me a LONG time to decide on surgery and even longer to find 2 surgeons who propose that it can and does work using a plant based diet in maintenance. That's another point I did not make clear and I should have. Perhaps this is cutting edge knowledge that will take a while for the bariatric community to accept? That's just pure speculation on my part.

Not with surgeries where you only have success following a high Protien low carb diet. If your way worked you wouldn't be seeking out surgical options to help you lose weight. So maybe, just maybe people who have lived this lifestyle for years might know a little more than you.

I didn't get to my weight by following my newly developed love of good nutrition. I got here by eating crap most of my life. If I never ate another piece of red meat again my heart would thank me. I don't particularly like meat. And I'm completely against factory farming, but I'm not here to push that particular hot button because this isn't the forum for it. I'm not asking anyone else to give up meat/seafood/their chosen protein, I just know it isn't for me. When I find things that might interest others I share the information. I'm not forcing anyone to make a smoothie with quinoa for heaven sakes.
Why you seem to take great pleasure in debating this with me is a mystery to me.

Why you seem to be such a know it all is mystery to me. I am trying to keep you from becoming a statistic, another failed WLS patient. I want you to be successful "for heavens sake".
If eating crap got you fat, try your lifestyle first before you let someone cut on you. You are trying to parley a surgery designed to be successful one way and shape it to what you think it should do. It doesn't work that way.
You are just another in a long line who won't listen to the vets because you think you know it all. You will be the one complaining you can't lose weight. Good luck to you!

You present yourself and an intelligent woman and have offered an alternative to the traditional, proven effective meal plan following WLS.
I understand the vegan/veggie thought process and nutrition.
Ponder this: with RNY your stomach becomes a tiny funnel.
1. Pour liquids/semi liquid/soft food in : pours right through ! equals : HUNGER-more eating-weight gain
2. Rapid carb loading after leaving the tiny funnel raises glucose levels which for some equals dumping.
Carbs come in many forms. Good/bad/and ugly. Our body sees them ALL as sugar and processes them as such.
PLEASE believe there is a science here and NOT an attack on your thoughts or ideas.......
I know the Smoothie idea would most certainly be offered by my surgeon and her practice if there was evidence in research that supports this. She runs a Center of Excellence and has been doing this for 20 plus years. Her success rate with her program is off the charts.
Her head would spin if anyone suggested a SMOOTHIE to any of her patients. NOT evidence based.
Don't you want evidence based research to promote the very best chance of success ?

That's fine, as long as what you're sharing is medically accurate with relevance to a post-WLS situation. A diet high in carbs-- even from "natural" fruits and such-- is not what most doctors prescribe.

I'm also against factory farming so I get all my meat from an amazing local farm. Are you able to do that? It's much cheaper now that I eat so little!

I don't know where you live, but this is a useful site! I found my meat farmer at my local farmer's market one year :) If you have 4H auctions at your county fair, that can also be a great way to buy a humanely raised animal and then you just have to arrange for the butchering. But there's normally information at the fairs on how to do that.
