Laxatives...

What happens if a post-op RNY patient takes too many laxatives...like 12 at once and barely goes...or 8 diuretics at once, but does not pee more than two times that day? What kind of damage can that cause? I'm talking over two years out.

You need to go see your Surgeon. I can understand taking a laxative, although why you would take 12?... but why are you taking diuretics? Sounds dangerous. First of all diuretics can dehydrate you and it you are dehydrated you will get constipated. Vicious cycle. If you are not taking in enough fluids there is nothing to pee out, even if you are taking a diuretic. I am just going to throw this out there, but is this a psychological thing or a physical thing? Abusing Laxatives and Diuretics is a sign of an eating disorder. This link talks about the effects of laxative abuse... which is dehydration and you are dehydrating yourself more with diuretics. You need to see either your surgeon or a Therapist. It is scary stuff.

I am not clear why you are doing this; because you are constipated, or because you are using (abusing) laxatives and diuretics for weight loss. But for anyone, post-RNY or not, this is a physically dangerous route and you need to stop.  if it is choice, you need to see a mental-health professional. If it is for physical problems, you need a doctor.

But whatever the reason, see someone. You risk very serious and long-term damage. Presumably you got RNY to improve your health. You are now risking not just your health but your life. Dehydration is very serious.

This is really dangerous behavior. Besides the short term damage you can do to yourself, you can cause permanent liver damage. This is in addition to the psychological damage from this eating disorder.

Please find a good therapist and lay this all out for them. Then see a dietician and talk about healthy ways to lose some weight.

I hope you take this seriously and address it. This is life threatening behavior.

I see you just created this profile to post this so I will assume you have been a member here before. I hope you get some professional help. You can do a lot of damage to your body with diuretics and laxatives. I will cut and paste from THIS article.

Laxatives and Diuretic Abuse: Health Consequences

Abusing laxatives and diuretics can have serious health consequences:

  • As you flush fluids and feces from your body, you can upset the balance of electrolytes and minerals — sodium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorous, for instance — that your nerves and muscles, including your heart, need to function properly.
  • As you use laxatives more and more, your colon can become stretched or "lazy." Also, overuse of laxatives can cause infections, irritable bowel syndrome, and possibly liver damage. Finally, you could increase your risk of developing colon cancer. “It can get to the point where people will need surgery to repair their colon,” Rago says. “It’s that devastating.”
  • The dehydration that results from laxatives and diuretics can cause tremors, muscle weakness, blurry vision, and fainting. Dehydration taxes your vital organs and, in extreme cases, can result in death.

If you have been doing this for 2 years and not seen a doctor for constipation then you have crossed a line into a serious addiction.  For a Non-WLS patient taking just one laxative too many could lead to potentially fatal side effects such as dehydration and kidney failure, the Food and Drug Administration has warned and for us it's twice as dangerous.  Studies have shown, your body adjusts and when 6 use to work, it then takes 8 and then 12 and so on until you cause serious health issues and die.

Run don't walk to your surgeon and or at least your PCP.

Keep us posted on how you are doing

This is an alias I made specifically for this post:

I am aware that I abuse laxatives and I've been diagnosed with Anorexia. I just got out of inpatient treatment for the second time in six months. I realize it's dangerous to abuse laxatives, but I didn't know if it's worse for those who have had weight loss surgery..... I don't always take that many and it hasn't been going on since surgery... mostly in the past year for weight loss. I've always had a hard time with fluids because I'm hardly ever thirsty. I see a therapist and doctor. They know I abuse them, but I haven't confessed to the increase and how often I've been doing it lately. My potassium is always on the low side and I've been hospitalized with a potassium drip to bring it back to normal. My digestive system bothers me now because I'm afraid that taking too many laxatives have shut down the natural process... so I take more. I haven't seen my surgeon in almost a year. I know that dehydration can kill me...so I'm going to be honest with my surgeon when i make an appointment.
