Sleeve revision due to acid reflux!

I am scheduled for a revision of a sleeve surgery I had 6 months ago.  I am having bad acid reflux and some vomiting.  Lots of stomach pain with eating.  I've been told 2% of sleeve patients have had these symptoms.  Anyone have a story to share?

I haven't had surgery yet, but I was planning on the sleeve and had to change to RNY on my surgeon's advice because of my pre-existing acid reflux. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon! GERD can be absolutely miserable.

I just had a revision on Feb 20th. I had the sleeve 4 years ago. I never had acid reflux until after I had the sleeve. It was so bad I was waking up in the middle of the night choking on it. I had a revision to the RNY. The recovery process is much slower than my first surgery. My DR. said that is normal with revision. Don't expect to progress as fast as you did with your first surgery. I am on day 15 and I am still on liquids. Anything else I eat hurts to much. Good luck.

There are two people in my local support group *****vised from sleeve to RNY because of reflux. Reflux went completely away from both after revision.

About 30% of VSG patients develop acid problems after surgery when they were acid free previously. I cringe whenever I see someone on OH with reflux who say they are ignoring their doctor's recommendation for RNY and doing sleeve anyway. Why buy trouble for yourself?

I think of that also.  One of my biggest deciding factors on RNY was the acid reflux I had.  I haven't had it once since my RNY.

I am pre-op and all but 1 person in my local support group has had a sleeve.  They love it, but a few reported having heartburn and acid problems post-op.  I have heartburn several times a week.  It's less often now that I am eating healthy and following my pre-op plan, but I still have it.  I am firm in my decision to have RNY for this reason.  Knowing this statistic makes my decision all the more firm.

Not that my opinion should matter, but it sounds like you made the right choice. Some people get their mind set on a particular surgery, even if it isn't the best one for them. I couldn't be happier with my surgery.

I think the experiences you and other vets on this site share are very valuable. I've done a lot of research and asked as many questions as I can in order to make an informed decision but everything points in this direction (RNY).  I finalize my decision officially this week, when the surgeon submits my paperwork to insurance for approval, and I can't risk making this reflux worse.  No, it will be RNY for me.

thanks for sharing!

Not personally but going in with a new diagnosis of GERD, (as a result of the EGD) I was warned it can happen as the sleeve creates a much higher pressure system.  Revision to R/Y is the only fix if it can't be controlled with a PPI.  I was lucky, repair of the hiatial hernia they found along with a ppi keeps it under control for me.  Sorry you're one of the 2% :-(

I have horrible reflux but when I went to my surgeon he said he would not recommend a revision because my bmi was 23.  My BMI doesnt help my reflux. I take meds, after meds, nothing helps it.  Who is your surgeon.  My surgery was 5 years ago.
