better habits now or food funerals?

I used those 6 weeks to start changing my behaviors.

1.  Ate smaller bites, used a smaller plate, fork and spoon.

2.  Gave up alcohol and diet coke

3.  I stopped eating cake, cookies, baked goods, ice cream and candy (still don't eat that stuff almost 6 years later).

I lost 18 pounds in those 6 weeks and still enjoyed several delicious meals.

2 nights before surgery I went out for my favorite restaurant meal and ate it, with wine.

A month after surgery I was back in the same restaurant, eating 1/5 of the same meal with a few sips of my husbands wine.

Nothing is off limits for me, except for my choice of giving up those sugary foods that have too much power over me.

That's pretty much what I'm doing, working on the lifestyle changes:

trying to eat within an hour of waking

sipping my water, rather than chugging

no water with meals

setting my timer to start the sipping 30 min after eating

getting that last meal in 2 hrs before bedtime

and I've replaced one meal with a shake already

Thank you for sharing!

I did have a diet prior to my liquid one. Even still I had what I called a "farewell tour" with some things. I didn't go crazy and stuff myself, just made sure a few things were on my menu.

I agree, I don't have a "list" to eat my way through but the other day I was invited to this place with great onion rings and decided to have a couple, not gorge on them, just savor a few bites. I'm working on that "mindless eating" part, lol

thanks for sharing!

No food funerals. I've done "final blow outs" or "last hurrahs" for years with every diet. Why do that??  The foods will always be there, I MUST choose to stay away from them or have a tiny bite now and then. I find quietly turning away from those demons I am able to tippy toe away without disturbing the sleeping beast!

I'm actually scared to have a final cheese-steak. I don't want to waste 700 to 800 calories or more on one meal. I'm hoping that like previous people have said I will be able to take a bite again..I am learning how bad I actually was to myself over the last 10 months while logging my food intake. I was talking to my wife about it last night. I would use about 3/4 of a stick of butter between my potato and the broccoli I was eating . Then I would have a plate full of chicken cutlet thinking I was "cutting back". I rely heavily on myfitnesspal app. This has showed me how bad I was. I would eat 10,000 calories in a day and not blink.  I was still eating like I was a college athlete when I would play basketball for 3-6 hours everyday and ride my bike for fun 10-20 miles. I ate whatever whenever because I was trying not to be a skinny ass rail. I even ate the 5 lb cheese-steak from Tony lukes that they feature on man vs food. I had them add mushrooms to mine. I want to be here a few years from now as a "vet" helping others . Just like the ones that are here today helping all of us. Thank you all.

That is a huge issue for NFL players when they retire. They even have a group that go around talking about it to athletes. http://www.livingheartfoundation.org/

Yes! I was about to reply to OP with the link to your cheesesteak stuffed peppers recipe!

I am pre-op and my husband has a few concerns... One of which is that I will never eat "normal food" again after surgery.  I made the cheesesteak stuffed peppers from your blog earlier in the week, and he and the whole family went crazy for them! I made the fajita stuffed peppers recipe for dinner last night with the same results.  Great recipes and fantastic inspiration - thanks Shelly!

Anyway... I've experienced many of the same thoughts and I'm trying to find ways to build the good habits now, and finding alternatives I enjoy so I won't have much to mourn.
