The body's set point

Hello,

I've been reading a lot lately about the body's natural set point for weight and how we destroy it over time by becoming obese and how to reset it.  I find it absolutely fascinating how the body will do it's best to heal itself despite all our worst habits and bad health.  The human body is a remarkable thing.  I'm a two time cancer survivor, going through a stem cell transplant in 2003, so what the body can do along with the help of modern medicine isn't new to me, but it fascinates me on so many levels.

The set point for body weight is decided with genetics and hormones first and lifestyle and choices second.  At birth our bodies know what weight we should be as a baby, a kid, an adolescent, and an adult. If we don't make any long term bad lifestyle choices, we will mostly follow in the footsteps on our ancestors with body weight and health issues.  So when we undergo WLS we have to opportunity to reset our set point for body weight.  The longer we stay at a certain weight the more the body wants it to be the set point.  This may be why we hit plateaus for long periods of time.  I really believe that once a person is obese for a long period of time the only way to radically reset the set point is through WLS.

Eggface,

Very nice video. I strongly believe that obesity is a disease and that achieving and maintaining weight loss over time are very difficult. However, with the help of the wls tool we can adopt a healthy new life style and achieve our goals.

Thanks so much for your fabulous food blog recipes.

Fantastic! I am pre-surgery and while my husband is supportive, he doesn't really understand why I can't lose my weight with diet and exercise.  He wants to understand and this video is a great introduction for him and anyone lose who wants to learn.  Thanks Shelly!
