Severe abdominal bloating for the last 3 years... Why???

Hi friends! I had WLS in Nov of 2010. I got down to 119lb, but am now sporting a healthier 150lb. I've had multiple complications over the last 4.5 years, including  bowel obstruction and hernia repair (emergency surgery-yay), gallbladder removal, two exploratories (one lap and one open), sigmoid colon resection due to a presumed volvus, chronic abdominal pain cited from adhesions which led to having a spinal cord stimulator placed, and more EGD's and CTs than I care to count. Oh and let's not forget the 10 hour small bowel study. That was awesome. It showed that scar tissue had encased my small bowel and confined it to the left side of my abdomen, preventing fluid movement of pretty much anything. Despite all of that, I continue to have SEVERE abdominal bloating to the extreme of looking 8-9 months pregnant. The scans don't show a definitive blockage or ileus-just the trapped air. I have cut ties with my original surgeon for many many reasons, some of which you just read. I have an appt upcoming with a bariatric, colorectal/GI surgical specialist at Wake Forrest Baptist Med Center. I also have the joy of being scheduled for a colonoscopy and EGD again next month. Has anyone experienced any of this??? Particularly the bloating???  There is no timely relation to food, my cycle, or anything I can pinpoint. The only relief is laying on my side for a good two hours to relax the bowel and allow the air to pass. It's excruciatingly painful and meds are useless. Ideas???  Anyone in the same boat?!? I'm truly going mad!

Google SIBO...and ibs-c.

I deal with a lot of that.  Or rather...used to. I modified my diet. Very drastically.

I Rem i bc ed any FODMAP food, any grains, simple and most complex carbs no sugar alcohols..nothing with gas (drinks).

I found out what foods i am allergic to and eliminated that.

My diet is very simple, and very low fiber. I take daily Miralx to make sure my bowels move.

I think i have motility issues (food moves slowly through my guts), so i make sure i drink a lot of water in between eating, and that i have at least 12-14 hrs in every 24 hours that i don't eat but just drink liquids..(to flush small intestines) .

my diet is low in carbs, and higher in fats.

I don't feel deprived. I eat proteins-  and i have some veggies...not a lot, but enough to give me a good taste.

For me, it's almost always something to do with what I ate.  It took years to find those triggers.  I had given in to the fact that evening gas and bloating was a way of life for a while.  One day I had the most heavenly French onion soup and found myself with horribly uncomfortable bloat and on the toilet all night.  This event was an epiphany for me.  Onions were a daily staple in my life.  With the exception of dessert items, they were in EVERYTHING.  Eliminating them eliminated 90% of my gas/bloating and I was no longer having to get up in the middle of the night.  Other triggers I discovered along the way were some artificial sweeteners, terriyaki sauce, straight milk (although other dairy doesn't bother me) and whey protein of all things.

Now, that covers the known culprits of what I eat.  The next thing to consider is what your body needs.  Those of us with RNY or DS occasionally get our intestinal bacteria out of balance.  This can be prevented and treated by ingesting a Probiotic.  Some take a probiotic pill for a heavy punch, while others are fine eating daily yogurt.  If left alone, though, this can turn into a bacterial infection.  I would make sure you've been tested for this (c-diffucile).  It's nasty, ugly and very difficult to cure for some.
