Actually, alcohol is a diuretic and can lead to dehydration (see p 56). Double Bad News.

Like people have said everyone is different, me I liked drinking b4 surgery & I still do but nowhere near what I used to. I didn't drink to get wasted, maybe a little faded, but that was it.

Now a days I hardly drink at all except on a special occasion & even then I drink the hard stuff like whiskey out of a shot glass. I felt fine, but I don't swing back the whole drink like I used to., & usually I only have the 1 drink I sip it like I was at a tasting party & follow it with water, it looks like vodka anyway. LOL

I asked this question as well, yeah I know it is better to stay away from Alcohol but I like it. Not to get sloppy drunk but to have a good time. I can't wait until I can have a ****tail again, but I am not craving it like a drug addict. But I think waiting 6 months sounds about right personally.

I developed alcoholism after weight loss surgery.  There is a crossing to transfer addiction group on OH that has over 1000 members.  I also run a FB group called "Transfer Addictions after Weight Loss Surgery" that now has 300+ members.  I never had a problem with alcohol before surgery.  Before surgery, I drank rarely and in moderate amounts.  After surgery, I followed my surgeon's recommendation of waiting 6 months, and then within about a year after that, I was unable to stop drinking without help.  The advice I give in my support group is:  You can start drinking as soon as you are ready to start gaining weight.

I became an alcoholic 2 years after surgery. It happens to a lot of people who have gastric bypass. The serotonin level in brain is different then before. It's not about switching one addiction for another.
