Went to my mothers house for dinner tonight, and she made Veveeta philly cheese steak burger helper with turkey burger... It tasted so bad I could only take a couple of bites... The funny thing is I gained a couple of pounds this week so I thanked my mother for helping me lose wieght... Lol... I think I will get a couple of boxes of this and watch the pounds drop off... My mother is an excellent cook otherwise...lol

I had a TKR in Dec., 2014.  Post-op I went to a rehab facility.  The food was so unappetizing I lost 15# in two weeks!  It wasn't bad, just unappetizing.  It was kind of cool not wanting to eat, even though it put the staff into conniptions because I wasn't eating!  There is a state agency which mandates the amount of food that a patient is offered (and hopefully eats) and when I was only able to eat 4 oz of oatmeal and coffee in the mornings it really threw them for a loop.  I have to admit, I had my family bring in things like fresh bananas and individual servings of Greek Yoghurt which I added to their menu.

It was an excellent side effect of surgery, and really helped to live through the two weeks of pain and PT I had to go through.

Mickey great reply, I have to ask how is your TKR now, can you get around without pain and does it inhibit your exercising in any way?

The great thing about TKR is the fact that I no longer had the arthritis pain I had dealt with pre-op.  There was no longer the pain of actually putting weight on the knee when standing or walking.  There was  (and is) some residual aches and pain of recovery from the actual surgery, but those were quickly dealt with by using the good pain meds that were prescribed.  For me, it was 15 mg of Hydrocodeine 2x daily.  I would take the meds with breakfast and by the time the Physical Therapy tech came to escort me to the P/T area I was easily able to navigate the walk and the succeeding hour of gentle exercise. Afterwards I was gifted with an icebag (heaven!) and that really helped.  I took the meds for a month and gradually tapered off until I was not using them unless I had a really hard day of walking, etc.

I can only say that the relief of pain from arthritis was a blessing.  The post-op type of pain is totally different.  The staff at the surgical site had me on my feet the day of the surgery, just for a few minutes, and I was amazed at the lack of pain.  It didn't hurt to put weight on my knees with standing, but there is naturally the pain that comes with healing of muscle and cut tendons etc.  That's what the narcotics are for.  I am now more than two months post-op on my right knee and almost 6 months of my left knee, and of course the level of pain in each knee is slightly different, but I can alleviate these pains with a topical ointment called Voltaren which is an NSAID.  Because of my RNY, I was reluctant to use the ointment, but my surgeon told me that due to the direct application at the knee, the active ingredient was unlikely to affect my stoma surgical site.  So far that is true.

The amount and type of exercise is slightly different.  I walk daily, for 6 blocks, or 25 minutes.  I like to do free weights and about 15 minutes on a recumbent bike at the gym 3X weekly.  So far, so good.

If you are having bad knees, I cannot strongly enough encourage you to go forward with whatever your doctor recommends.  I did all the steps from steroid injections, etc., and finally when none of the usual things worked, I did the TKR.  The doctors will not recommend heavy-duty surgery until your pain levels exceed a certain point.

I may have some minor pangs from healing, but it's definitely not the same as having the pain from OA.

LOL! Another way to lose weight is to have dental problems. I highly DIS-recommend it. (*grin*)
