Cheating on the PRE OP diet
It's very simple. As in ALL facets of life-you slipped, now get back up! No one is encouraging you to cheat nor condoning that you did. Some of us have slipped, some of us haven't. Yet ALL of us are here because at some point in our lives we DID cheat, we DID slip up-MANY times! We had NO self-control or discipline and others let us know that. How did we feel?
Making it through, or NOT making it through a 8, 10 or whatever day pre-op does not take that away, nor etch you for failure. Yes, it does help our mindset knowing that we can do it but many because they were able to lose weight on pre-op, became over confident and elected to NOT have surgery, only to find themselves months later back to where they were.
Yay for those who did follow pre-op properly and correctly, you have to appreciate them for being able to do so. It does show a certain type of focus. Yet, we still ALL were at one time fat, obese, overweight, undisciplined with no self-control-ALL in the same boat.
Just because one jumps out the boat last or even in the wrong does not mean he will not make it to shore. It's all in the endurance and perseverance. SIMPLY PUT: You slipped, now get back up on that horse and ride, ride, ride!-THAT is what counts!

I never cheated on my pre-op diet. Thankfully I only had a one week liquid diet. I don't know where anyone came up with the liver doesn't shrink that quickly baffles me. My surgeon told me immediately after the surgery that he could tell I took my pre-op liquid diet serious because my liver was nice and small and very soft. Nothing you can do about your slip at this point. Only thing you can do is move forward and make sure you stick to it. A doctor can halt your surgery if he gets in there that your liver is too big and too hard to move out of the way. I hope your mind is in the right place and you are back on track, not following your surgeons instructions could be costly on the surgery table. Why increase your risk? Good luck.
Hi Joann!
its really challenging the first few days, but it really does get easier so try not to get discouraged yet. Everyone has different requirements that they must follow in their preop diet. For example, my surgeon put me on a clear liquid diet, which consists of protein shakes, 1 jello, minimal watermelon and a little broth each day. i have read on here that other preop diets allow a small meal each day, in addition to liquids. What are you allowed to have?
Seriously, hang in there. Make up your mind that you are not going to give in because it really reinforces the positive behavior.
I also found that I cheated when I was hanging out in my kitchen area, my mind started wandering- especially because my boyfriend was cooking a savory stew in the crockpot. That's when I gave in and cheated on days 3 & 4. On the days that I am busy at work or running errands, I am less inclined to think about food so stay busy! I live in the northeast and we keep getting hammered with these blizzards which have confined me to the house for days at a time. That also makes it challenging so if you can stay busy and away from your kitchen, do it. I went out with some girlfriends one of the nights and my one friend who is a skinny Minnie and never eats crap ordered nachos. That was tempting but I actually held out. She was confused and kindly kept telling me to feel free to dig in, but I explained that I was on a "cleanse" and she accepted. I was so proud of that role reversal and my ability to hold out.
Seriously, hang in there. Keep busy and away from areas of temptation. The protein shakes do help to fill you up. I hold my nose and gulp them down the best I can. It's a slippery slope, but you can do it!!
Sending positive vibes to you!

Dear Ms Luxurycouture,
Thank you so much for your kind and wise words. My daughter and I read them together and we are feeling your support even though we are so far away. I avoided the kitchen on the weekend and that did help. Today I cooked a very simple meal for my daughter and I did not pig out. Only 12 Days to go!!
It is quite cold in Berlin today 3*C , I went to work and am looking forward to a quiet evening at home.
How was your day? Are you counting down to your OP?
I am so proud of you that you did not eat the nachos!!! Wow.
Thanks again and have a nice day!

I had to lose 10lbs and keep it off until the day of my surgery or risk it being cancelled. I had a hard time losing the weight but once I did I was very proud of myself, I actually lost like 12.5 lbs before surgery. You are scared and this is your coping mechanism, you need to check yourself and really re-set and get yourself in a good place, of course easier said then done, success is all in your hands, so use this opportunity to restart your life at a weight that makes you happy. Today is a new day.
My pre-op liquid diet included one meal of protein and salad or veggies and 2 fruits a day, as well as the shakes. I had 50+ BMI so it wasn't because I was a lightweight. You should always follow your doctor's orders, but certainly don't eat rice cakes or starches. Before you know it you will be through it. Hang on.
