Cheating on the PRE OP diet
I have been on the 2 week liquid diet now for 8 days. I'm in the home stretch, but yesterday and today I cheated. I had a rice cake yesterday and today I had a rice cake and a about 1.5 cups of crock pot mean and veggies that my boyfriend was stewing for himself. I haven't eaten meat in 3 years and today I broke down. I feel so guilty, but this is really hard. If I had willpower to eat very light, I probably wouldn't be getting this surgery. Anyway, I know I'm in the home stretch and tomorrow is a new day to do the right thing.
Who else cheated on their preop diet? Anyone?

Don't feel bad---there's no real benefit in a liquid diet. It takes several months to actually shrink your liver. What a 2-week diet CAN do is deplete the glycogen stored in your liver, making it less slippery. The sort of diet that can do this is a high-protein, low-carb diet, but there's no benefit in it being liquid.

Not many people here. They give you the preop diet for a reason. Usually the ones who cheat are the ones who aren't ready for surgery. If you can't follow directions for 8 days you are jeopardizing your life post op. Usually the ones who cheat preop are the ones who become statistics and not success stories post op.

You can do this!!! I know it's really hard as I'm on day 5 of my pre-op diet. As you see on here, not all programs even require a pre-op diet and people still get there surgery. Tomorrow is another day so just get back on track and don't look back. Good luck with your upcoming surgery...YOU GOT IT!!!

I'm on day 3 of my preop diet & my plan allowes me to eat a sensible meal at night. I also get 2 snacks along with my protein shake for breakfast & lunch. It's not easy. I was so hungry today I had my sensible meal for lunch instead. From what I've read everyone's plan is different. You've got this!!
Having the surgery helps you to stay on a food plan and that helps you to lose weight. It is not magic though. It will be a lot harder to stick to what you need to do as time goes on.
People who cannot stick to their pre-op diet are soon cheating on their post-op diet. You really need to think about whether you are ready to make the lifelong changes that being successful at weight loss will entail.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
How do you know that not following her surgeon's plan will not affect her outcome at all? If following the plan doesn't improve one's outcome, why would a surgeon even recommend a plan at all?
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
It worked out for you, but there have been a few here, not many, who went into surgery and were closed right back up again because their liver was too large and the surgeon didn't feel comfortable moving forward. Why take chances of experiencing that disappointment?
To the OP:
Think about it: using the preop diet to get your head in the game and practice for post op is just smart. If you rely only on your anatomical changes as your guardrails after surgery, your long term chances of success are going to be limited. Use this time and your active postop work (and I use the term work specifically) to redefine your relationship with food. Yes, many of us do mindless dumb things and eat stuff we shouldn't on occasion. What I'm saying is that this is your opportunity to get mindful of your choices in order to set yourself up for greatest success.

It saddens me to see some people be so harsh when you're obviously doing something to try to change your life. I thought this forum was for support not put downs. You cheated with meat and veggies not a slice of cake! Good attitude that tomorrow is another day. Best of luck!
