Liquid Diet Complaining Sesh!
okay, I admit it- I'm whining. I am trying to find anything to take my mind off food. This pre-op liquid diet is KILLING me. Not literally.
My surgeon told me I had to buy the Bariatric Fusion powder and mix it with low fat milk and have it 4 times a day. In between, I am allowed 1 snack size sugar free Jello cup each day, 1 cup of broth each day, 1 cup of watermelon and unlimited celery. There is no mention of crystal light or tea as an option for drinking. I have only been drinking water, but today I decided to have crystal light to help me with the fluid intake
The he unlimited celery part is cool and so is the variety of snack allowances. What's killing me is the protein mix. I hate drinking milk and I hate the protein mix. Although I am supposed to have 4 of these smoothies each day, I have only been able to down 2 a day. I am concerned because that means my protein intake is only half of what it should be.
Today was day 4 of 12 for my pre-op diet and it was the hardest. I keep trying to remind myself that I am a third of the way through, but I am struggling and hungry and I hate the protein shakes.
I know I'm paying my dues for the life I am signing up for. Any advice? How did you get though your pre-op liquid diet?

Just gut up and get through it...I had a terrible bronchial infection for a week of my pre op and thought I was going to keel over but it was over 130 pounds ago so it was nothing compared to that!! What a difference a day makes. After the surgery I was not hungry for many many months which was great...so soon you will be reminiscing with me... Best of luck :)

Just do it. Stop overthinking it and complaining about it. We have all went through it. Whining about it isn't going to make it any better. You should read through the boards and see all the positive outcomes of the members here.

It's important to load up on the protein now to help carry you over until you are able to hit your daily protein goals after surgery.. if you are really having that difficult of a time with the bariatric fusion, try calling and asking the nutritionist if they can recommend another protein drink that you'll be able to tolerate.
The hunger might be from not getting all the protein that you are supposed to, I was advised 100g of protein a day.. broken up over the course of the day so every 4 hours I was getting at least 4-5 oz of protein in
The liquids only really does blow for the first few days though .. I'm going through it for the second time now and it's no easier this time than the first time.
Good Luck!
Yes the pre-op liquids suck and so do the post-op liquids, but the end result is so worth a few weeks of hell. Trust me it all gets so much better. I am one week post-op and have been following my doctors plan to a T. Not only am I down the 10lbs I gained from all the IV fluids they pumped into to me for 2 and a half days, but I have also lost another 5lbs.
When you are at your goal weight your going to look back and say "I can't believe I was so upset about the liquid diet that was so foolish of me"
If you really can't stand the protein powder, why not try another? I like the Syntrax Nectar varieties, and they can easily be combined with water. Try the Nectar website and get the sample pack. I know my tastes changed post-op and things I could barely stomach pre-op became nauseating later. Otherwise, try some GNC sample packs. After all, if you get the protein in that you need, why not try something else? The Bariatric Fusion may be his personal choice, but there's nothing that says it must be yours. We're all different!
It am unsure as to whether or not I can switch powders. I talked the bariatric coordinator and she suggested that I mix with water instead of milk and that helped a lot. I just close my eyes, hold my nose and suck it down. It will do for now. I spent $45 on the powder so I might as well use it for the next week. Surgery is a week from today!
