Boredom eating aha moment

I am on day 3 of a 3 week liquid diet. Overall, the last few days have been tolerable. I haven't cheated but man it has been tough.

A couple things I have realized. I am definitely a boredom eater. During the day and at work I have no problems at all. My issue comes in when I am home for the evening and starting to wind down. I want to snack if I get still. This is something that I am going to have to work on.

Second realization. It hit me today how much our society revolves around food. It is on every ad, every tv, every street corner. Everywhere I look I see food. I have heard others talk on this subject but it has just hit me how much my life revolved around food. I feel kind of lost not being able to eat and munch.

I had a similar realization before I had WLS, and unfortunately it does not stop once you have your surgery. As many have said here before the surgery we have is not on our heads.  It does take a while to break the boredom, I personally have gotten back into activities that keep me occupied and not thinking about what I "think" are cravings.  If I do watch TV I mute the commercials about food.  It is a process, but so worthwhile!  Good luck to you and your new life!

On day 3 and you've had great insights.  To realize that you eat out of boredom is an important insight.  It will really help you post-op. When you want to eat out of head hunger, it will probably be from some level of boredom, and you'll be able to use that insight as a strategy not to eat.

You're right, food is everywhere.  There are convenience stores every few blocks and between them is either a restaurant or fast food joints.

Being on a liquid diet is obviously temporary, and can feel empty and lost from not eating actual food.  Before you know it, you'll be on solid foods after surgery and losing weight.

Good job on your valuable insights!

Cathy

I remember having similar feelings on my pre-op diet.  At one point I posted to my blog that Facebook was full of food.  OMG.  So much food :P

Keeping busy will help you in the evenings!

I agree! I decided yesterday that I was not going back on Faceboo****il after surgery. Lol. It is one more temptation that I do not need.

I was exactly the same way!  Breakfast and Lunch were no problem sticking to any diet.  I'd typically eat only around 800 calories up until night.  Of course, between dinner and snacking, I'd throw down at least 3000 more, and no wonder why I got as large as I did.

It's still tough for me, and I imagine it always will be.  Now, I do have a small snack at night probably 3 times a week, but it is small, high in protein, and still within my 900-1200 calorie daily limit.

It's tough to do the liquid diet (the hardest part of the whole process for me), but keep with it.  It'll be worth it, and it'll set you up for success!

Find something to do with your hands that doesn't involve food.  Reading is my favorite pastime, but far too easy to do one-handed (i.e., food in the other!).  Try knitting, crochet, scrapping, other hobbies, which require that you keep your hands and mind busy.

I also agree and being a few years out from having RNY, I have to say it's still hard!  Sometimes I fall for it, but most times, it seems like my mind is getting better at fighting against temptation.  Sometimes I just fall flat on my face but I've tried really hard.  Between life and society, we do have quite a hard time resisting and getting used to seeing food in a different way.  I'm also a NC resident by the way!!!  Good luck...you can do it!
