I had my surgery jan 30. Still in pain. I feel like i have a stitch/cramp in my side when i try to sit up. It is very painful and takes my breath away. Not easy to get fluids and protein in im just trying to drink lots to avoid dehydration. Very frustrated and feeling like i made the wrong choice

Hi Donnaleahnoel,

You don't list what type of surgery you  had?  The first few months can be rough for some.  Yes, keep drinking, protein first and don't feel bad about calling your surgeon's office and letting them know all you are feeling and going through. Do you have access to a support group? They can be a wonderful source of support also.

Why is it we feel pain less when we know others are going through the same thing?    But it's true!

Try posting this on your surgery type forum also.  You can access it by clicking on Forums, and surgery type.

We look forward to your updates!

Don't get discouraged. Your body needs to adapt to the changes. Just take things slowly. Drink what you can, when you can. I hated the clear protein liquid and had to force myself to drink it.

If your procedure was done laproscopically, then the pain may be from the gas used to inflate your abdomen to allow the surgeon room to work. It doesn't cause any harm, but just needs to be absorbed by the body. Getting up and moving around may help relieve this pain.

Most of us who have had the surgery felt the same way in the immediate post op period. but it is so worth is in the long run. Use these forums to vent your frustrations, questions and successes, too. They will happen, and you will soon be feeling much better and healthier too.

Good luck.

You had major surgery...  I had the DS on New Years Eve and asked my surgeon about those pains while I was still in the hospital and they said it's very common.  The largest incision is where they bring the organs out of when they are ready to be removed.  They put some internal sutures in there and that's what usually causes the pain in that area.  The rest of my incisions were very little pain at all.  You are doing great.  It's really hard while you are in the early recovery stages to get everything in so by trying to ge****er in, just keep trying.  You can also suck on sugar free popcycles or jello to help out.  The swelling of your insides will go down gradually and it will get easier to get more fluids in.  I still can't get all the ounces in they want us to reach for, but it IS getting better.  Congratulations!!

I felt like I had made the worst decision of my life! BUT it got  better and now I am SO GLAD that I did this - 6 months post op, 89 pounds gone, more energy and mostly being able to handle the new way of eating. Do you have pain meds? Call your surgeon. Also, move around a bit - I rode a recumbent bike and it helped with the gas they pump into your body. Hang in there! It WILL get better!
