Check with your insurance to be sure, but if you have comorbities, your BMI can be as low as 35 to get any wls, including RNY and DS.

I amhovering just at 35 and am preparing for RNY due to diabetes among other comorbidities. I did ask my surgeon about the DS, but in her opinion since I am starting at a lower weight I'd actually lose too much with it. I initially went in wanting a sleeve because I didn't like the idea of someone rearranging my intestines, but I believe RNY is the better choice for me after learning more about it. Also, one thing that actually put me off about the sleeve is the take out most of your stomach and discard it, while with RNY though it's bypassed it's still in there. I don't know why but but for some reason I like that...I guess I'm weird 😃

... and I am the opposite when it comes to the residual stomach left in the body.

With a sleeve, you have a functional, albeit smaller, stomach that can be scoped if there is an issue. With RNY you're left with a portion of your stomach  which can't be viewed if an issue ever arises.

That's one of the many reasons why I chose the sleeve.

I had my RUNY in 12/13.  The medical reason for my surgery is that it was the only surgery that would help with my severe GERD and gastroporisis.
After my initial consultation and before my date of surgery, I lost 60 lbs on my own (by following the 'post op' dietary recommendations).

I lost 60 lbs pre-op, by following the post op regime.

Nine months post op, I had reached my goal of 130 lbs.)  I'm 5'8".  Now, over 13 months pre-op, my weight fluctuates between 125-128 lbs.  My sleep apnea is gone, as is my hypertension and GERD and gastroparisisis.

Given the choice, I would have had the surgery much earlier.

Please feel free to IM me if you have any questions.
