Please also research the Duodenal Switch, even if your (current) surgeon doesn't do it. After all, your goal should be to get the form of surgery that's most likely to make YOU healthy and happy for a long, long time, not to make your current surgeon happy. It's far easier to change surgeons now than to get a revision later. (You might want to visit the Revision board, too.)

If you MUST choose between the RNY and the Sleeve, I suggest the Sleeve. The five-year post-op maintained excess weight loss stats are pretty much the same for both. With the Sleeve, you would still be able to take NSAIDs, have a fully functional stomach, and no malabsorption to contend with---and should you not lose enough weight, or have significant regain, revising a Sleeve to a full DS is MUCH easier than taking down an RNY and converting it to a DS. (And yes, when an RNY fails , converting to the DS is the form of revision with the best success rate.)

Dumping is an unreliable method of getting sugar out of your diet. No matter which form of WLS you choose, that's a monster you're going to have to slay pretty much on your own. (Although I will say that getting most of my stomach removed change my taste for sweets. Most of the time I'd much rather have bacon. *grin*)

RNY on 08/29/04 with

Hi nicola3301

As you can imagine this is asked a lot.  Here is a link to a search results we did for you.  Read the posts from members that have discussed this before.

RNY vs VSG

As other members have mentioned with your BMI you may want to check out the DS procedure.

RNY on 01/08/15

I am a guy who was prediabetic for 10 years. Diagnosed with Diabetes in June. Had creeping high blood pressure and severe sleep apnea. BMI of 48. Edema in the ankles.  I hit 60 yrs old in June and couldn't do simple physical tasks without gasping for breath. Lost 50 lbs before surgery and 25 lbs since RNY surgery three weeks ago.

Now: Fasting Blood Glucose in the 70s - no more metformin

Skinny ankles - no more Lasix

No more blood pressure meds.

Sleep apnea improving

I chose RNY because of greater weight loss than VSG and more effective against diabetes.

I stopped all high glycemic carbs six months before surgery. I can live on protein and veggies the rest of my life.

By the way, first post on this site. long time lurker.
